Message: If you wanna see if there are any codes stored, cycle the key to the on position (not start) three times and then on the third time, leave it on. The check engine light will flash and give you some two digit codes. Look around on the internet if you get any codes and find out what's wrong. When and engine will crank and not turn over, the first two things to look for are fuel and spark. I would suggest fuel pump (had a 1994 that did the same thing) and coil.

Message: Thanks, But still no go.I'm going to have to dig deeper into the wiring harness although I wanted to leave this as a last resort. I need to find out what would cause the check engine light not to come on when igniton is turned ON. I susect there is no power to the smec.Is there a way to run power directly to smec without hurting anything. help, help, help

Message: I know what I would do. I would take it to a mechanic and get him to find out what is wrong with specific directions not to work on anything untile I gave the okay, in which point I would do the work myself. Be carefull. Some lying SOB's, will claim that in order to find the main problem they have to replace some parts giving the codes. MAP,MAF, all that stuff. But alot of the time that's not even the problem. They did that with my car. They cheacked alot of parts, and replaced them and charged me. Then I took my car to another honest mech, and found out that my timing was off, which is what I told them in the first place.

Message: Hey,found the problem. There is a wire connection that was corroded uderneath the fuse block that is under the hood. I had to unbolt the fuse block to get at it.Someone had mentioned the 3 to 1 wire before, and they were right.Kind of scary digging into the wiring harness that deep but thats what you have to do. Thanks everyone and good luck with your repairs.

Message: You don't have to use the key method to find out what fault codes are stored in the computer. They do make a code reader that plugs up to the computer under the hood. It will show you exactly whats wrong and where its at.

Message: Ya,older dakotas are common for corosion in the wire harness on the left side.If the engine light doesnt light up it means there is no 12v power up or ground ,or an internal problem in the PCM.

Message: Joe,
Glad to hear you found what was causing the problem. I had a similar problem a couple years ago when the battery just upped and quit all of a sudden. The battery didn't have enough juice to turn over the engine or run the computer... anyways a new battery fixed everthing right up!

Message: Sorry but I skipped the ESP course, So you'll have
to get the codes.
No scanner or reader needed,
Grab a pen and paper head out to the truck.
Key on/ key off 3 times
(by on I mean all the way forward just shy of
engaging the starter)
The check engine light will flash
Count the flashes - each flash represents a number
Then all are in 2 digit codes.
Ex = 5 flashes 5 flashes = code 55
Post back what you get for codes and I'll let you
know what they mean.

Message: I was just browsing trying to find a couple of codes that my truck is spitting out at me. The codes are 12 32 55 I am pretty sure 55 is just the system telling me it is done but the other two have me stumped. My truck is running but she misses a little and check engin light is always on except sometimes in the morning when she has sat all night she will make it to the end of the road *(aprox. 1 mile) then the light comes on. During the time the light is off she runs great and is rearing to go. Then light comes on and she is slugish. any ideas and do you have the codes. I have already replaces cam sensor and i believe the brain was changed to. They thought it was the brain and turned out to be cam sensor. Thanks in advance for any help.

Message: Hi Terry
Ignore 12 and 55
12 means battery was recently disconnected
(most times it wasnt but code still shows up)
55 is end of codes.
Now 32 Depending on year (I'm guess early to mid
90's on your truck)
Then 32 would be EGR valve.
Check the hose and wires to it first.
If you have higher miles though it will be time to
replace it.
If you have removed or gutted the cat I wouldn't
bother because without it you lost the needed back
pressure. With out that back pressure you will
only burn out the new EGR.
On a good note a new EGR makes for a far better
running engine.
A bad EGR valve will cause poor running engine,
rough idle, pinging, loss of MPG's.
need anymore help just ask.
