Subject: Automatic gear shift lever problem
IP: Logged

Message:
Yesterday, I tried shifting my 2003 Dakota (4x4) into park and it wouldn't go into park. The gear shift lever on the steering column felt strange. It finally went into park on a couple of more tries.

Then I tried again later and it did the same thing. Then I could not get it out of park. The movement of the gear shift lever became very sloppy.

I had it towed into my local Dodge dealer, but I'll probably have to wait a couple of days for it to get fixed.

Anyone else have this problem ?

What was wrong ?

Is it something with the linkage to the transmission or the transmission itself ?

The gear shift lever always felt weird, and for the life of me could not figure out why someone would engineer such a thing. Is it just me ?

I had the same problem a few months ago on my 2002 Dakota. It took the mechanic about 5 minutes to adjust the shift cable underneath the dashboard when he finally found it. He looked in the fender well and under the hood for it, but found out that its design had been changed starting in 2002. It worked okay after that, but he went ahead and ordered a new shift cable since it was still under warranty. He replaced it about 2 weeks after that.

2002SXT... thanks for the info !

I got my Dakota back yesterday afternoon. They adjusted the shift cable. I didn't get a chance to talk to anyone from the service department because they were closed by the time I got around to checking with them. Being a Saturday, I figured they wouldn't have even bothered looking at it until Monday.

I wonder how often this problem comes up... I sure hope it doesn't happen again! What a pain !

I'm going to call or stop by tomorrow to talk to the service manager.

There's something you might want to ask the service department about that I noticed on my Dakota after they replaced the shift cable.

Twice since they did the cable, the shift lever didn't come right out of park. After I took my foot off the brake pedal and put it back on, it worked okay. There is some kind of safety interlock to keep you from shifting out of park without having the brakes applied.

I'm not sure if it is a solenoid or hard linkage, but there is a possibility that it might need adjustment also.

I have a 2002 QC auto and I believe that it is typical now for you to have to press on the brake pedal before you can take it out of Park. My 1995 GT Mustang did the same thing.

With my car in park, I cannot turn the key to start the car. I have turned the steering wheel left and right, but that's not the problem. What is the problem? I have a 2005 Honda civic automatic.

So, does anyone except an official Dodge service shop know how to adjust the shift cable on a 2003 Dakota automatic? In a blizzard a month or so ago, I went to the hardware store. I couldnt get the truck into any gear except drive and second. Like an idiot, I turned off the ignition then realizing that I would not be able to start it because it wouldnt go in neutral or park so I started to strongarm the shifter to at least get it into neutral. Well, after that failing ,I crawled under and found a black walnut neatly jammed in the linkage by a rotten squirrel. Took it out. Well, now it goes from reverse through 2nd but no park or 1st. I probably knocked something out of adjustment by trying to jam it into neutral, maybe even stretched the cable. I followed the cable from the tranny up to where it disappears under the dash to no avail. I dont want to take the whole dash apart if it isnt there.

My 2003 Dakota sport 5.9 lyre engine. Went to put in park the
shifter felt funny and it moved but did not go in park. The lever
will move freely from park all the way throug and back almost
like linkage came off investigated both linkage good I am able
to move transmission through it’s range manually under car.
Put it in park tried again went into reverse dive neutral d1 and
d2 no problem but would not come back up and after got all
the way down felt like cable broke. Disconnected cable at both
ends ends it moves freely at transmission it clicks in gear both
directions fairly easy. Put back on same issue..
Anyone have any ideas
Thanks

Older Dodge's have a recall for the shift
interlock. I was FORCING the lever into gear
until it nearly broke. Then realized if I lifted
the lever once, then let it go, then lifted it
again, it easily went into gear. Later found out
about the recall and had it fixed (free). Some
sort of safety mechanism release was out of
whack.

My 1993 Dakota ext cab 2 wheel drive goes through the
gears fine BUT THE INDICATOR WON'T SHOW WHICH GEAR IT
IS IN. IT CAN BE DRIVEN BUT YOU HAVE TO KNOW WITH
INTUITION WHICH GEAR YOU ARE SHIFTING INTO. IS THERE
A REPLACEMENT PART FOR THIS?
