Hey Guys and Gals,
Went in to have the Dak serviced at 20000 miles, a bit early, but she needed it. Everything is good, 'cept for one thing. Maybe it's normal and i'm worried for nothing. After they changed the oil the tech came in and said my serpentine belt was starting to crack. They got warranty to pay to replace it. Am i going crazy, or aren't belts supposed to not crack or anything before 20k???? I've got the 3.9, no air, 5 speed.
Any thoughts are appreciated!!

I also have the 3.9 5speed with no air. I was thinking of replacing my belt because I have a nasty sueal when I go over 35mph and one dealor suggested it. Ive looked at mine and its not cracking yet but I think it will need it soon

I guess i had always thought belts lasted longer than that...;) now i know to keep a close watch on mine long about 40k, or so. I wasn't ettin too bad of a squeal, but he got it written off as an 'engine noise' for warranty.

The belts will crack and that is normal. As long as there are no missing sections in the ribs it is ok to have cracks across the ribs. Check a Haynes or Chilton manual for verification.

K, i will do that. i have the haynes manual for up to '99. Took her for a short drive today, and noticed pinging....time to go back to the dealer again...;)

I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota, 3.9 V6. I had been noticing the serpentine was getting that glazed and cracked look for a while. It also has been making a lot of squeaking noises, especially when it's cold. It has 56k and mechanic looked at belt during oil change and recommended an immediate replacement for $129.00. I can get a belt at Advance for $19.99. I believe I can figure out how to change it myself.
