Subject: Rough Idle
IP: Logged

Message:
Need some ideas/help on fixing rough idle on my 01 QC 4.7l.
It started about 2 weeks ago, the truck seems to idle a little low - to the tune of about 400 RPM's sometimes. It mainly idles at about 600, but sometimes jumps between 4-800. Not all the time though!
Early mornings it seems to hessitate when I back out of my parking space and then "D". Has not stalled yet though. I thought it might be the injectors, so I had those 'cleaned' at Merchants / Firestone.
Some one told me it might be my throttle body that needs a good cleaning. I had it idling the other night and I just happened to be leaning on the open drivers door and noticed the truck was idling pretty rough, but at about 5-600 rpms.

Any suggestions?

I run 87 octane fuel - it was suggested that I run 93 AND use an octane booster (104+) or what ever it's called, and then run 93 or 04 octane all the time after that. I thought we could run 87 all the time with these trucks - have been for over 1 1/2 years now!

Thanks
Julian

As far as I know. (I'm no scientist) Octane should not make a difference with idle. The only problem I know of is ping. That is when the fuel combusts to early. Mainly in high compression engines. I don't know what the compression ratio is on a 4.7L but don't think that 87 octane would cause it to idle roughly. Have you checked all of the simple stuff like an oil change, and wires, cap and rotor, and spark plugs? If it's not those it could be a sensor or you TB ralle dirty? I can't really tell. There could be a whole bunch of reasons why it would do that.

Check for stored codes, if none then:
Pull & check plugs, rotor, cap, wires. If OK then:

Clean the throttle body & IAC motor & passageway. IAC controls idle speed. Be careful not to push or turn the IAC pintle. Materials needed are: throttle body gasket & can of carb cleaner - only about $5

Basic steps are:
remove wires from sensors
remove throttle cable
remove vacum hoses
remove throttle body (TB)
remove sensors
spray TB & IAC w/cleaner
clean TB & IAC
reverse steps to reinstall

Reset PCM, idle should be fine. If not trouble shoot IAC / PCM. 99% of time it is a dirty TB/IAC

First off, the 4.7 isn't the same as the engine in granny's Chevette. If you can find a rotor and cap and high tension wires, then you don't have a 4.7.

You could try cleaning the TB by taking it off and thoroughly and carefully cleaning it but I doubt that will be it. If it is, good, if not I'd begin to suspect you have a coil going south.

I have a 2000 4.7 and mine sometimes does that same thing. But, mine is a 5 speed. After many trips to the incompetent service department where I bought it, and about 10 calls to DC customer service, I spoke with some engineer that worked on the 4.7. His best guess was that there was some "glitch" between the speed sensor on the rear end and the computer. He suggested that I replace the sensor and have the cpu flashed. It doesn't happen enough to mess with it for me, maybe once or twice every three months. I leave the A/C or defroster on pretty much all year, this runs the compressor, and the idle is raised by the cpu, then it allmost never fluctuates the idle. Hope this gives you some ideas.

Try cleaning the IAC (idle air control) on the TB. If you still have a low idle, you can raise it with the idle set screw. Looks like you need a special tool to turn it but you can grab the threads with needle nose pliers to adjust.

Pulled the Throttle body off and gave it a good cleaning. Been working great ever since.

1- someone at this site said to raise the idle a hair to smooth it out,2- others said that its normal for a 4.7 ,to just live with it. 3-the dealer needs truck for 3 days to check it. what would you do?

I have a '02 QC 4.7 AUTO. Dealer said it was normal (as with everything else that has gone wrong with my truck). I find if I merely 'blip' the accelerator with my foot on the brake, the idle comes up to a nice smooth 600 rpms. Go figure.

I think every Dakota idles rough and there is very little to do about(If anything). Ive had mine in and had the "service professional" comment on how rough it is idling and then they look at it and find nothing wrong! I dont think that running a/c , defrost is a great thing to stop it cause she gets thirsty on the gas tank. Time for to dodge to make a decent veichle!

Actually, I think its time for people to stop accepting that answer. I assure you that my 4.7 does NOT idle rough. I suspect the rough idle problem is often really just a low idle problem. Raise it up a bit and see what happens.

There is a PCM flash for the backing up and then "D" on the first start of the day. Just go to the dealer and tell them what is happening and they will upgrade the software. I had the same problem and that fixed it.
It may have something to do with your low/rough idle too.

I have an 02 QC 4.7 auto, and I also have the idle "problem". When the AC/defrost is not on, the idle after warm up can drop to 450-500 rpms and get a bit rough. It's normally about 650rpm. I cleaned the TB and the IAC this weekend, it's amazing the sh-tuff that builds up on those two after only 22K.... And this morning the low idle is back.

Final note, as said above, a blip of the throttle brings it back from low to normal.

Kowalski -- how do u adjust it? Does someone have a handheld programmer? Keep in mind, the idle is controlled by the PCM. Thanks for the help.

Keep in mind, the base idle is also controled by a set screw on the TB, just like with a carb set up ! Just grab the threads with pliers and turn it, or drop the $10 for the special tool for the tamper resistant torx head. I did mine while I had the TB off, gasket is reusable, this is very basic and easy, not high tech, don't be afraid.
