Message: Honestly I have the blanking kit from crutchfield and it really doesn't look bad at all. I looks very normal to me, I agree in past vehicles it was noticable, but not in my Dak, looks like it grew there.
FWIW, I went with a Kenwood Z828. GREAT Head Unit.

Message: Dont waste your money on the pioneer. I have it and its not worth the $200+ (I paid $240 2 years ago). Your paying for the "custom fit", and could get much better for the money.

Message: Waiting for my Quad 5.9 4x4 and have a Kenwood KDC-MP8017,its a MP3 player and have not hooked it up yet but all the specs seem very good.I have had Kenwood Stereos for the home and car for a long time and the quality is there.I ordered it from Crutchfield and you get a Free mounting kit with a Free wiring kit which I can hook it to my factory amp without cutting the wires apart. The price and service is great at Crutchfield.

Message: What's wrong with the Pioneer? $200.00 doesn't seem like much to begin with, and the features rival that of any other manufacturer.... so what's the beef?
I'm hoping, BTW, that I never find a need to upgrade my head unit, 'cuz I bought the high-level sound system so that I could have the steering-wheel controls. Maybe someday, the after-market companies will figure out a way to interface with these controls..... THEN I'd consider upgrading.

Message: Dont know about the model the other Jeff has, but the one I have sounds like crap. I have the DEH450H and 4 pioneer speakers to go with it. The power is 35Wx4, sounds more like 10Wx4. Most decks now come with 50Wx4,are half its size, and are cheaper. If your blind, this is the deck to go with. The numbers are HUGE! Like I said earlier, your paying for the "custom fit", not the quality.

Message: The pioner I bought was $239, it looks great and sounds awsome. The alpine looked a lot better but sounded about the same. The alpine was $399. Ths a bit of a difference in price. I agree the alpine would be my first choice, but I have a reg cab and I didnt want much out of the system. So I went with the pioneer and im going to get line-x for my bed. :)
What ever you do buy the wiring adapted. My total install time took less then a hour.

Message: The problem with the oversized stereos made for GM and Chryslers is they will not fit in an '01 Dak. The 01s have rounded corners unlike the previous square corners. If you just want to get a CD player look on eBay. I just picked up a Chrysler 4 disc in dash changer(nib) for $220.

Message: I have the Alpine CDA-855.
This Head Unit is pricey... but it is very clean. Take something with a lot of treble to test out the head units you are planning to buy.
Take something like a soundtrack to a movie or classical music. Make sure that you test against the same set of speakers at the store. Listen to the head units. You can't fool your own ears.
I also wanted the 1.5 DIN size unit.
I think this is the link to a 853. The 855 has a few more features.

If that doesn't work, visit http://www.alpine1.com
Make sure that you have a few extra dead presidents in your wallet. You'll need em if you want Alpine equipment.
Hook up an external amplifier like a MRV-F357, and you're set. 90x4 and 300W to your subwoofers.
That'll light up some eardrums.

Message: I have had a Alpine, new Panasonic, and a JVC Kameleon. All were fine, each had its drawbacks but they all worked fine. As for the DIN and 1/2 size, they look terrible. I have a adapter that fits the single DIN and then has a little slot below for one CD to fit in. Looks very good and is easy to install. Most audio dealers should have this kit. My new Sony Explod is the best I have had though. My 2cents, I dont mean to insult anyone's opinions.

Go to www.crutchfield.com. They have the kit you need. You can probaly find one at a local Radio Shack. Thats where I got my kit for my '87 Dakota. I run my own little audio business here at home to neighbors and friends. It's called "D's CAR AUDIO" I haven't had any orders yet though. Anyway, Check out Radio Shack!!! :)

Message: I have a Kenwood KDC-MP8017 that I had in my little Talon and I am awaiting my new Dakota to install it in. This is a GREAT radio!! I first had the Aiwa CDC-MP3, and that just plain sucked! It would skip ALL THE TIME! Some people said it was my cheap CD Burner, which it isn't! Then I bought the Kenwood, and I used the same CD that skipped in the Aiwa and it has still yet to skip no matter what road I take! I love it!

Message: I agree.. my kenwood has NEVER skipped! I think it has alot to do with a buffer, as in it loads the song into memory from the disc, instead of reading from the disc.
This is on the 8017 MP3 radio.
any thoughts?

Message: Here are some detailed instructions for stereo install on the 2001 Dak (not that you'll need them - it's a piece o' cake). Just got my Rockford Fosgate RFX9200 put in - got it on UBID for about $130 + $16 for insured shipping. Got the harness and install kit at Wally World for $16. (Crutchfield originally had it for $399, but now they are out of stock.) The unit sounds GREAT - even with the factory speakers!!!

Message: I have the Alpine din and 1/2, it was pricey, BUT I LOVE IT!!!!!!. In addition to all the features it has the illumination matches the interior lighting, and the color of the casing is the same exact color of my dash!!! I had the pioneer din and 1/2 in my previous Chrysler Lebaron (high school car), it was nice but was easy to tell the price difference. Im not gona trash it cause I read that alot liked it, but uhhhhhh to list a few.... when you lightly press a function button the whole face slightly moves with a little noise to go with it.....and the illumination was very hard to see if any sunlight was getting in. But since getting my Dakota I have gone with only the best I can get for it! Ive replaced the front door speakers with 6.5" JLs, and replaced my rear speakers with Kickers, with a Kicker Punch 400.4 to push em all!!!! I dont have a sub but am very pleased with the sound I get from that setup in my RC, and the amp is the same color of my interior carpet! I love it!

Message: A long time ago you could find a .5 din eq to pack in the leftover space. So I had a regular head unit then the eq in the place under it. It was an awsome setup. However, after looking around today I could not find them any more. can these still be found?

Message: I just installed a Pioneer DEH-P7400 in my 01 Durango and install was simple as long as you get the wiring harness. I was also able to keep my steering wheel controls with a steering wheel interface module. They cost about $60, but as long as your new radio has a remote that comes with it, it will work. I also got the dash kit that has the slot below it for a cd, or whatever you want to put there. It looks good and also has mp3 and XM radio ready. I got everything from autotoys.com. Stereo was only $250, harness about $8, dash kit $15 and interface for steering wheel controls $60. I also have some easy to follow instructions for the interface if you need them. Just E-mail me if you want pics of the finished product or instructions.
