Message: Wow!!!! Called the dealer for pricing on tranny maintenance for my '02 QC 4.7 AWD Auto. $129 for flush -- not bad, but doesn't replace the filters (sounds stupid to me). $244 to replace filters and flush system -- OUCH! Every 30k miles??? Double OUCH!!!!
Also, looking to add a HD external tranny cooler -- brings the grand total for filters, flush, cooler, and install to $545.61!!!!!!!
How about this??? I'll buy the $42 B&M tranny cooler, put it on myself (which the dealership said will likely void my warrantee -- his example was a leak in the cooler that destroys the tranny), buy some filters for $20, drive the truck to the dealership, drop the pan in the parking lot, change the filters, push the truck into the bay and have the tranny flushed for $129, bringing my grand total for the whole shabang to $191 (versus the dealership's $546).
Anyone else got any good ideas for this one???? What about the flush thing? Is this really a good idea to flush the system and leave the old filters in? Sounds fishy to me.

Message: Dealers suck. find yourself a reputable local mechanic to service the tranny and add the cooler. I first went to a chain business that does brake changes, repairs etc. and they quoted me $90+ for a flush and up to $130 to drop the pan and change the filter. I went to a small business that other people had recommended as being honest and upfront and he dropped the pan , changed filter, added fluid for a grand total of $59.45. I was so impressed that I had him change the plugs and fix a few other things I was going to do myself. He will get all my repeat business for now on. There is a highly visible shop in my town that mostly caters to out of towners who don't know any better. This crook will start with the most expensive parts and procedures and troubleshoot on down to the cheapest fixes enroute to fixing the problem. He did a complete brake/rotor job on my wifes car (before i met her) without permission then set her up with financing because he knew she was a single mom and couldn't afford to pay outright for it. Her dad was thrown out of there because he threatened to beat the sh@t out of the guy. What a pos. He is worse than any dealer I have ever been to.

Message: Managed to find a dealer about 15 miles from my house that will do the filter change, then flush, for $169 (flush only is $129). None of the local shops would do the filter change -- only the flush. I think this dealer I found will do about anything and be fair about it due to the fact that they only built the facility about 10 months ago and I never, ever see any customers there. Kinda sad that a dealer has to be starving for business to be fair.
As far as the cooler, I think I'm gonna do that myself -- found a B&M thru Summit for $42 (rated for 16k GVWR - 10 tube - 3/4" thick - comes with an installation kit). I'll probably put that in just before I get the tranny flushed. Does anyone know how much fluid I'm likely to lose putting the cooler in? I know that I'll have to make up the extra volume of the cooler (figure about a quart), but how much will run out when I disconnect the hoses. Just wanting to get an idea of how much ATF+4 I'll need to put on, only to have the dealer pump it back out.
Oh, and FYI -- the dealers (aside from the first one, which I don't think had any idea what they were doing) all told me that the tranny cooler from Mopar for the Dakota only comes as a kit with the Heavy Duty radiator - $375 (parts only). No thanks.

Message: I just called a reputable tranny shop in my area. Thats all they do is trans repair and maintinence. He said that flushing an electroncially controlled trans was a bad thing and to simply drop and clean the pan, drain the fluid and change the filter.

Thank you MikeS.
Good to hear you state that a REPUTABLE Transmission Shop is recommending Amsoil Universal Synthetic ATF.
Maybe that will calm some of the flaming.

Message: Cottman Transmission, is a chain shop had them change filter and flush $ 90 with coupon, seems like it was 20 or 30 more without coupon.

Message: Hey Steve, you convinced me to use Amsoil (well, you and some other people). I'm switching my motor over at the next oil change (44K miles now) and the front/rearends will come in a couple of weeks when I put the Dana trac-loc in the rear. Transmission will be changed whenever I get some money together again to do it. After research and talking with some mechanic friends of mine, as well as your info, it sounds like the way to go. Thanks

Message: I have a Hydrolic auto, with about 165K miles worked on it,and the engine in my '95 Dakota also is a 2x4 with a V6 and it has decent power. The shifting is just a bit harsh, and it jerks a bit when it the Tourqe converter locks in.

Message: For my Hyrdolic auto. The coast was about $155.25 tax included.
Does it help in shifting quality? It just depends what year and how worn you Auto is. But, I've notived that it don't hang in second before I had it done.
