Subject: Thump noise when backing up
IP: Logged

Message:
When I'm backing up and turning to the left (with the driver's side on the inside of the turn) the front end of my '97 v8 2wd dakota makes an extremely loud thumping noise. It really sounds like something is breaking every time it makes this noise.

The only thing I've done to truck recently is replaced the ball joints with Moog Parts and had it aligned, that was two weeks ago.

Did you replace both uppers and lowers and that could also be the tie rod ends. I'm redoing mine this weekend as soon as the hurricane goes through and I'll let ya know the outcome. Oh yea mine makes that same exact popping sound.

It's rubbing and you'll never get rid of it. Even if you replace every part on the front end.

This isn't a rubbing noise. It's a noise that makes you think a front suspension piece just fell off.

At any rate, a coworker and I found it this morning. With the wheel turned all the way to one side, I could see the upper control arm move when he backed up a little. It looks like the rear bushing is either completely gone or maybe the bolt holding it in place is just loose.

Can those bushings be replaced seperately or am I going to need to get a completely new control arm?

DrewzR/T, Are you in NC? I'm in the Raleigh area, and keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't get too bad here. I've been through a bunch of hurricanes before, but this is the first time as a home owner. It's a little more stressful that way.

Jason,

I know the noise you mean. When you reverse with the wheel cranked to the left you hear a thump-thump-thump-thump.

I had it so loud backing into a parking space at the dealer that everyone in the lot turned around to see what airplane was crashing.

The caliper bangs on the control arm (lower?). The only way to prevent it is to not turn so hard.
