 Subject: 5.9 vs Hemi

I have heard that there will be a hemi and a wedge engine offered in a Dakota in 2002-2003. Is this true? Is 2001 the last year for the 5.9 R/T? I am trying to decide if I want to go ahead and buy a 2001 R/T or wait and get a 2002 truck with a more powerful engine. A 4.7 is not an option. Neither is waiting past fall of 2002. What would you do?

The 5.9R/T is a nice truck. It can go pretty fast. And with some modifications you can have a truck equivalent to a ford lighting. But dodge is coming out with a new hemi engine and that will probably spell the end of the 5.9 but there will not be any aftermarket parts for it so i think its a toss up. But i bet the ne hemi will be real powerful, better on gas, More designed for driveing then towing. But on the other hand i have owned two 5.9s and never a problem.

I don't think the Hemi is ready yet. If it was they would of used it in the new 2002 Ram configuration which is completely new with the option of a 3.7 210hp 4.7 240hp an 5.9 245hp.
Hence no 5.7 hemi
I'm thinking it's going to make around 275hp to 285hp for an R/T. If your lucky a 300hp 5.7! It should sport a new shell in 2003. They always seem to compensate for the extra power engines get these day's. Either by adding weight or losing torque.

If you have a lot of money to spend the 5.9 will be better for you can easily produce a lot more power than the 5.7 with after market parts. I am sure the 5.7 will also take as long as the 4.7 for goodies to become available. The 4.7 has been out 2 years and a lot of engines have been made but after market parts are still hard to get allthough they are coming out now.

I'm sure you want get the current body style with the new hemi plus it's going to cost more when it does come out. You know DC will have to make up for the new production and research.
If the new Dakota looks anything like the new 2003 Ram, I'm not sure if I would want one, even with it's new power plant.
