Subject: LSD prices and places to buy?
IP: Logged

Message:
Does anyone have any part#'s, prices, or places to purchase a limited slip differential for a 1999 4X4 Dakota. It is a 8.25 10 bolt rearend with 3:55 gears (I want to keep the same gears). I am looking for a Detroit, Dana, or OEM, but any other input is welcome. I can't seem to find what I'm looking for on the net. Please help if you can. Thanks

I sell the Powertrax No-Slip for your truck.

Some info:

Whether you want the added safety of high traction for everyday street use or extreme traction for the most demanding applications, the No-Slip advantage is just a simple upgrade away. Precision synchronization control provides exceptionally smooth and quiet operation. There are no friction clutches to wear out and no special lubricants required. Easily converts your open, limited slip, or locking differential for superior traction output.

Synchronization Mechanism Eliminates Ratcheting Sound Typical Of Locking Differentials!

Enables a 2WD Vehicle To Outperform a 4WD Vehicle In Poor Traction Conditions!

Takes 6,000 to 36,000 ft-lbs of Torque! Much Stronger Than The Axles!

Most Models Installed In Less Than One Hour!

Maximum Power To Both Wheels Off The Line And In High G Turns!

Installation: The Powertrax No-Slip Traction System can be easily installed in your existing differential case without requiring special tools or setup equipment. Only basic mechanical skills are required. The Installation Guide provides easy to follow, step-by-step, fully illustrated instructions to help make the installation straightforward. Be sure to follow all instructions and heed all precautions. The ease of installation will vary depending on your differential type. Review the Installation Guide before starting to become comfortable with the procedure and to insure a successful installation.

The power trax will blow away the mopar sure grip. It's a locker for the street-- even my mopar sure grip slips, and will eventually need replacement.

The powertrax is also available for the front to make for a formatible offroad machine.

I looked at the power trax, but they seem awfully expensive, how long will it last and what kind of abuse can it take before it blows up and takes out the rest of my rearend? I can put in a limited slip and still afford to replace the clutches once or twice for the price of a power trax. Convince me this thing is worth the $ and is bullet proof.

It's less about money and more about how you
want the torque (re)distributed by your rear
differential.

Is it more important to you to have both rear
wheels always locked at the same speed (and the
outside torque suddenly quitting in a turn) with
a locker, or always living with some spinning on
the icy/muddy side but a bit more torque
available on the dry side like with LSD?

Never drive with a locker if you just have 2WD
and make a lot of sharp right or left turns on
icy corners where lots of traffic goes,
especially on hills. All the torque goes to the
inside wheel in a turn.

Most of my driving is city or highway, with only the occasional offroad trek. I mainly want just a LSD for the rain and road conditions we get here in the winter (Nebraska), and for a little extra help when climbing hills or on the logging trails when fishing in Wyoming Snowy Range area. I see no need for a true Locker, it just wouldn't fit my purpose. The only towing I have been doing is snowmobile/motorcycle/ATV trailer, and the occasional fishing or smaller ski boat. Nothing big. I dont do any racing so am not worried about burning up clutch plates on powerful takeoffs, or by pulling anything of significant weight.

I seem to only come across two limited slip units for my 8.25 rearend, Auburn Supergrip High Performance Series $347.99, and the Dana Trac-Lok $160.99. Is the Auburn that much better than the Dana?

I'm going to put the Dana in mine when I get the $ to do the gears and install at same time. I may be wrong, but I thought the Dana was what comes in dakotas...?

ZenDak, you may be right about the dana being OE. It seems like I read that somewhere also. Maybe someone who knows for sure can post it true or false.

jdlliard: I have the Powertrax installed in my Dakota R/T, and I can tell you it works great. The limited slip isn't all it's cracked up to be. I'm originally from Nebraska and go home at least once a year and usually in the winter. My Powertrax has worked just fine in the snow ehre my factory limited slip sucked. The factory limited slip will still give you one wheel spins on snow and ice, where as, with the Powertrax, since both wheels receive the same amount of power, you can keep moving and moving in a straight line. You know what happens on an icy hill one one wheel starts spinning, you tend to slide to that side. With a good set of tires and the Powertrax, you won't have any problems. It takes a little getting used to since it's a different driving experience, but once you do, you'll never go back to a LSD. Personally, with the Powertrax, I can pretty much control wheel spin, and I know when they spin they both will spin. With the LSD, you never know which wheel is going to spin, or if both will. Some will say it doesn't work that good, but I can say first hand it definitly improved the driveability of my 250+RWHP Dak R/T in the snow.

Oh, and I have over 30K very hard miles with many trips down the 1/4 mile and many hard corners on my Powertrax with no problems. I wrecked my '99 R/T I originally had it in after 15K miles of use and it still looked new with no signs of wear. After installing into my '00 R/T, the ratcheting noise I had in the '99 went away, the unit is quiet, and still works as advertised.

Thanks for the info HSKR, but the powertrax is just to expensive for what it is. I can get the Dana trac-lok installed for $260 all in. My truck is 4X4 so I don't worry about tire spin in the snow or ice, I want better grip on pavement. If I was doing offroad stuff I would go with a full locker but they just are'nt made for street use. The clutches may wear out in the LSD but then you replace them, when that powertax goes its gonna take out everything.

Unless you're racing, the Trac Loc will do you just fine at WAY less money! They're time tested and tough. Why do you think all of the Big Three used them at one time? Because Dana means tough, ask an ol' hotrodder, he'll tell you. I've got one in the rear of my 1963 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 and it is great and I'm runnin' 4.56's front and rear and she's been in some bad ass she-it, bogs, and deep mountain snows in Montana and Alaska over the last 15 years. Price wise, you won't go no better, get that Trac-Loc, son!!!!
