My wife has a 98 3.9L 2WD that continuosly shudders violently at speeds around 50MPH. Also at idle it nearly dies out and sputters. Is this the infamous spark knock problem? The dealer has had the truck in the shop a dozen times. They've changed injectors, plugs, wires, map sensor, I beleive the PCM has been either reprogrammed or changed out, they even pulled the heads suspecting carbon buildup and found nothing. Nobody seems to be able to find the problem. If any of this sounds familiar let me know. The truck has 36k on it. Thank's in advance to all that reply!

If it is speed dependent it sounds like a transmission, drive shaft, or wheel balance problem. It is almost impossable to get an engine to shudder. You would have to have a contionious detonation problem to get the engine to shudder or a problem with your crankshaft.
