Subject: Bottom End Tick and Valve Chatter IP: Logged
Message: Starting about two months ago, I began to notice a tick tick tick coming from the bottom end of my '02 QC 4.7L AWD Auto (very slight and intermittent). Now, I'm noticing that anything over 1/2 throttle going uphill yields some nasty valve chatter and the tick is much louder and consistent. Have it going into the dealer tomorrow. The dealer will simply say 'it's normal'. Does anyone have any suggestions for starting a dialog with the dealer so as to get this fixed? Any ideas as to what might be causing either (or both) problem(s)?

Message: JES, post how you make out at dealer. My 03 has some ticking, esp when cold. Dealer said Tech heard nothing unusual. Mechanic at work said it sounded like valve train, but nothing serious. Maybe dealer doesn`t want to dig into motor for a bad lifter. I don`t think it`s the pump for evap syst because it always there but worse at start up. I plan to have another Dealer take a listen but I don`t expect a different answer. It`s probably nothing but it does bother me.
Good Luck

Message: My tick seems to be coming from the bottom end; it's loudest when I'm under the truck - directly under the oil pan. The tick seems to get worse as the truck warms up. The truck is at the dealer now. I'll let you know what they come up with, but I'm sure it'll be something along the lines of .. "sounds normal .. nothing wrong with it". Oh, how I miss the Ford service department.

Message: A bad lifter...surely it couldn't be the bottom end going out,but then agian a ticking or chattering...it could POSSIBLY be that but on new motors with all these wires and computer sh!t there could be something in there i don't even know about.

Message: Just got word back from the dealership. "No abnormal noises were found." Thank goodness!!!!! I'm so glad to hear that the tick coming from the engine and all the valve chatter was just my imagination (along with the imagination's of two other passengers, one of which is a mechanic himself). Oh well ... it's not like I bought a $30,000 truck or something. Guess I'll just have to wait until the warranty is up and take it to a competent mechanic. Oh, how I miss my fantastic Ford service department. Love my DAK, hate the incompetent Dealers.

Message: Take the truck back to the dealer and stand there with him as you both listen to the ticking noise. Tell him you know that should not be happening and is not normal. Make sure he hears it with you standing beside him or he will continue to say its nothing. They might just be trying to outwait your warranty. Dont forget to mention that you didn't pay $30K for a piece of crap that has engine noise. Be firm.

Message: What he said, they might be trying for your warrenty to run out because then they get paid,But if it is a big problem like the bottom end going out i feel sorry for you if your warrenty goes out and you have to pay out of your own pocket for that, thats going to be like $2500+ dollars to rebiuld. They know that thats not suppose to be doing that just like you know it too.Oh,and i second that,be firm.

Message: I called them back. They said someone would get back to me. Nothing yet. I expect I'll hear from them sometime in December. I told the PR person to talk to the Service Manager and explain to him that, if there are no 'abnormal' noises, that I need to know exactly where the tick tick tick is coming from, since it wasn't there a month ago.
In addition, I'm thinking about devising a plan. How's this? Drive the truck til it has 68,000 miles on it (just before warannty runs out), sell it, and buy a Ford. Sure, my Ford had it's share of annoying type problems, but at least the dealership GRACIOUSLY fixed the problem, instead of giving me the runaround.
Love the truck .... hate the dealership.

Message: PR person called me back. Said nobody in service feels they need to talk to me. The ticking is normal and that's that. I did notice that the ticking speeds up and slows down as I turn the steering wheel .... bearing in power stearing pump??? I'm just gonna figure out what it is myself and then take the bill to the magistrate to have them go after the dealership. Thought that would be a fun, rather novel approach for handling the incompetent a-holes at the dealership. :o) Have a great day.
