Subject: Check Engine - Code P0174 ??
IP: Logged

Message:

Yesterday, the check engine light came on in my
2001 Dakota Quad Cab 4.7l.
Gas mileage has dropped significatly, about
7 mpg less than before.

I checked the codes using the key on/off sequence,
and the Odometer showed P0174 in the window.
I looked this up, and I found:
P0174: H02S1 Fuel lean Sensor1, Bank2
The instructions said to check for a leaking exhaust,
or to check the MAF sensor.
What I have been reading about this truck is taht is does not have
a MAF sensor, but it has a MAP instead.

Anybody have any suggestions on what to look for to
resolve the P0174 Code ?

Last night, I decided that it was time to change
my Autolite 3923's, even though I did not think that
this problem was related. I had 35,000 miles on
the copper plugs.

In the process of changing the plugs, I found that
a 3/4" vacuum hose that runs from the air cleaner box
to the firewall / drivers side of the engine had
come loose. I am assuming that the vacuum loss could
have caused the engine code.
I reset the codes, and drove to work today.
So far the engine has not thrown any codes at me.

I hope this fixes it.
Thanks for your help.

The vacuum leak most likly was your problem and that leak was the cause of the bad gas mileage because your motor wouldn't be getting the right air/feul mixture to run just right and that would cause it to through a code at you.If your dakota throughs the code back on after about 300 miles or so just let us know.

HELP !

The Engine Code P0174 came back.
The truck is running VERY RICH.
If I goose the throttle, it spits black carbon out
of the tailpipe all over my driveway.

I checked everywhere for more vacuum leaks, and
have not found any.

I am not sure if I should replace the O2 sensor next,
or what would be causing this problem.
I think that the O2 sensor should notice that the
truck is running far too rich, and correct it.
Unless there is another sensor that overrides
the O2 sensor.

ANY IDEAS ???

Well if it spits out black carbon out of the pipes then its running to rich and my guess it would be the 02 sensor,1 question though...Do you still have all 3 cats? Because mine runs a little rich because i have my 3rd cut off.

I went to Autozone, and they pulled the codes.
The also saw P0174 on their reader.

They told me that this points to O2 Sensor Bank #2.
O2 Sensor Number 2 is on the drivers side behind the
cat.

I couldn't believe that this truck has 3 cats, and
4 O2 sensors on it.
By the way, noone sells an OE O2 sensor for this
truck except for the dealer. The dealer wants
$145.25 for one O2 sensor.
I think I may buy a universal O2 sensor and
splice the wires from my failed sensor to connect
up to my truck. Autozone sells the universal
sensor for $69.

Strange thing is the P0174-2/1 code indicates a "Fuel System Lean" condition according to the factory diagnostics manual. P0172 indicates a rich condition.
Several possible causes are documented (14 listed).

You could verify O2 sensor by checking voltage output. A good scanner can show this, as well as yourself if handy with a digital multimeter. This could verify if an O2 sensor or not.

Arrgh !!!

I bought the universal O2 sensor and installed
it on my truck, and no difference.
I checked the O2 sensor on the passenger side
(behind the cat), and it was coated with carbon.
I put the new O2 sensor on the passenger side, and
the cleaned sensor on the driver side, and it still
show P0174 (lean on bank #2).

I also believe that autozone lead me to the wrong
O2 sensor. If appears that Bank#2 is the passenger
side, and Bank#1 is the driver's Side.

I plan to pull the upstream O2 sensor on the
passenger side (before the cat) to inspect and
clean it if necessary.

I found a post on another site for P0171,
which is lean Bank#1, and they suggested
Possible causes:

- Fuel filter/pressure regulator (high pressure)
- Kinked/restricted fuel supply line
- TPS voltage greater than 1.1 volts with throttle closed
- Fuel pump inlet strainer plugged
- Fuel pump module
- MAP Sensor (Out of calibration)
- TPS voltage change not smooth
- ECT Sensor (Out of calibration)
- Fuel pump capacity (volume) out of specs
- Other engine mechanical problem

Any ideas on how to check the MAP, TPS, and ECT
Sensors to see if they are in calibration ?
