Subject: Numbers in tire size? What do they mean?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 93 dak, stock 15in rims, and Im starting to look into getting tires. http://www.tirerack.com is GREAT for finding the tires you need/want/desire/etc....

Anyways, my tire size is 235/75-15

Im guessing 15 is rim size, but what is 235 and 75 stand for?

May I also add.....the door jam says stock size is 195/75-15

Local auto places say my tires are too big for them to do an alignment...they CAN do it, but wont quarentee it.

235=tire height
75=tire width
15=rim diameter

If the door jam says 195/75/15, that means the tires that original came on the truck were shorter. Someone put taller tires on your truck.

That also means that your speedometer may be incorrect, if the person that put on the bigger tires didn't have it calibrated. Any change in tire height from stock will affect your speedo reading.

235 is width
75 is the sidewall height. 75% of 235.

EBL is correct. The metric tires are measured like that.
235 width
75 is the aspect ratio..the sidewall height is 75% of the width
15 is rim size

Now if your tire was a 30x9.50x15
30" high
9.50" wide
15" Rim

30" is "tire diameter" not to be confused with "height" which is fron the edge or the rim to the tread.

Dude, those of you whom think you know it all are particularly frustrating to those of very few of us that do.

You're wrong, he was right. You've confused tire height with sidewall height !

You are correct Not quite. The 30 is tire diameter, which in turn (pun intended) is tire height. If you measure from the rim to the tread, as you suggested, you will get the sidewall height NOT tire diameter. If you measurements are correct I would have some huge ass tires on my Dak. I don't know you and don't care to....I have enough friends. I will, however, forgive your idiocy because, well, everyone is entitled to one mistake. You have spent your one mistake. Actually two...You spelled your name wrong. But hey who am I to criticize. I just come here to try and help all I can. I do actually know a little bit about the automotive field.

Nice quote there...Once again proves my point
