Subject: major carbon buildup in exhaust..

alright I need some advice. My 1990 V6 is blowin out carbon like crazy. About a month ago it sat for a couple weeks with no running. It seemed fine befire this. I started having problems with power and emission. The engine seems to be bogged down. On the highway, it has way less ability to hold a higher speed without changing gear all the time. I use to be good going 85 mph, just crusin. Now sometimes at even 65mph it is struggelin. I got a new O2 sensor and instaled it today. The old one was black with carbon. All powderly. Then as I reved the engine, I could see black smoke comen outa the pipes. I looked at my tailgate, and it has a black powder film on it. Inside pipes are like chalk. And I even found black streaks behind both pipes on the concrete. Oh and I put a hand in front of the pipe and got splatters of black on it.
Whats the deal? Is the 6er about to kick the crapper? man I hope not. Or bad gas? Or with a new O2 sensor will it clear up after a day or to. My gas milage has been crap lately too. Hope one of you has a remedy for me. Thanks
Joe E.

Yeah I plan to get a set of cleaners. Lucas treatment for the gas. TB cleaner. I run injector cleaner about a third of the time. Later.

OMG another moron thinks that removing the cat will cure what is more likely a bad carb or a need of a tuneup or a bad pcm or a bad sensor. Might even be bad plugs or a timing issue. worst case is a burned exhaust valve. "gut the cat" what an idiot, you make me laugh.

hey Catman....you think its a carb problem huh??? Pretty safe bet that its not. Not on a fuel injected truck. A '90 is past due for a cat problem. I had the same thing happen on my 90. The cat gets pluged and will burn the diverter valves out in no time. Nice to know all the chickens who are afraid to post their real name. Just jump post to post with a different name. Probably the same dick who messed with Larry.

Thanks for the comments guys. I havent had a cat for over 2 years now. Just starting having problems. so its not a bad cat. Or a bad card!!! hahahahaha. I got some trecron additive. And Im gonna clean out the TB. Maybe that will help. And installed the new O2 sensor already. That helped alot. But it still is blowing blacksoot out. Thanks again.

How about the air diverter valves ??? Try this if you havent already. Take the belt off of the air pump and see if that helps at all. I had a bad diverter and it puffed some black smoke. I ended up just cutting the belt on my air pump and that took care of it. Keep us posted

The diverter valves are at the front of the engine by the air pump. Does the comp throw any codes?

The EGR valve pulls exhaust gas from your exhaust manifold and throws it into your intake manifold. This effectively makes the volume of your engine smaller and your emissions smaller also. The spent gasses are innert and won't burn again.

Sometimes they can foul up with carbon. I had an EGR valve go back in '93 or so and the car would run fine one minute and be spitting carbon and running like crap the next. It's probably a long shot, but worth checking.

i think that the guy will probably not respond looking at the date of the post.

if its a GMC than the engine is probably past its prime. i would do a tune up.

my toyota use to blow oil out the tale pipe but that little 4 cylinder never blow just burn oil faster than i could refill it.

and some mods to slow it down!

Just stop and think a bit jon > If blue is oil , black is............... gas > Your running very rich > Get your book out and stsrt checking things that cause a rich problem > How many miles on this engine > What kind of care (service) has it had during it's life > I see no reason to think the engine is shot > At the very worst it could be bad valves > But then you never said how many miles on it > Might be 300,000 plus for all I know >
