Subject: Are my U-Joints damaged? IP: Logged
Message: I am hear a whining/grinding/whistling sound coming from the rearend. I read my Haynes manual and it said it could possibly be the Universal joints. The truck is an '87 3.9L V6 4x4 and raised 2" w/ 31x10.50 BFG AT TA KO. The sound is most audible around 40-45 mph, and when the gas pedal is held at a steady position (mid-way). And while braking to a stop. Is it a lot $$$$ to replace if this is so, or what else could it possibly be.
Any help is aprecciated.

Message: when U-joints go bad they either give of a squeek or a click that changes as the speed of the vehicle changes. Aint never heard of whistling/whinning or grinding coming from them, sounds more like wheel bearings.

Message: Try the u-joints first, if its a shutter especially when you accelerate, it just might be them. They're about $15-30 each, usually 2 for the rear shaft. If its not them, then it probably is the bearings (whirring)
