Subject: ABS, Brake Light, and Dead Battery IP: Logged
Message: I see posts about the ABS and Brake light goign on at the same time. Most of them are about a sensor in the rear. This just happened to me at the same time my alternator or battery died. All three at once. I'm not sure at this point if the battery or alternator is dead. The other day my battery was dead, I am not sure but I might have left my lights on to kill it. Anyway, I charged the battery and its been ok for a few days. Just now the abs and brake light came on. I also noticed fluctuations in the voltage meter on my dashboard with the engine rpm. The higher rpm is, the higher voltage meter reads. It started up fine before this happened and now its totally dead, the interior light barely even goes on. While I was idling before I shut it off i also noticed a little flickering of the dash lights. There was also engine noise in the radio which is not normal, especially since the radio was off. My question is: has anyone experienced this? If so would you think its the alternator or the battery? The alternator is 10 years old an the battery is 3 or 4 years old.

Message: all that happened to my brother's 1998 Jeep Wrangler. It was the battery like i suspected. When the juice gets low and the volts are low, some different warning lights will come on just to let you know that they might not work when needed because of the lack of power. On my brother's jeep, i had the ABS light and SRS light on.
One sure fire way to find out if you alternator is bad, is to have it tested. If you have an Autozone, they will be able to test it.... but, you can only check to see if an alternator is bad by making sure that you battery will hold and charge and is fully charged.

Message: Whatever happened to the devices that you mounted an alternator to then spun it up and put a load on it and a meter on the device would tell you what the amp output, if any was? I remeber many years ago (35 or so) seeing this used at my uncle's auto repair shop.

Message: Before I shut it off, the engine ran at just about full voltage. The needle moved a little depeneding if I was idling or driving. After I shut it off, the engine wouldnt start again. The alternator tests out perfect. 13.8-13.9 volts. I called interstate batteries in Carlstadt, NJ and they were very nice. They were about to close but the guy offered to bring me the battery on his way home. I had the old one out by the time he got there and he helped me put the new one in. I think I will get my batteries from there from now on. The old battery was a die hard and only lasted 3 years 11 months. Its still under prorated warranty but I dont want another die hard. Not now anyway. I dont see Sears coming to my dakota with a new battery like Interstate did. It starts up perfectly now but the real test will be to see if it still does in a few days. I let you all know how it turns out.

Message: DC should put a spare battery and a spare evaporator up there with the spare tire. Maybe a spare set of ball joints too......

Message: My ABS and park brake light are coming on but I have none of the other symptoms described above. Is this an electrical problem or a sensor problem? Anybody have any other ideas as my battery and alternator check out perfect.
