Subject: Weird rear end noise

Message:
I have the LSD rear end in 01 4.7 CC with 10,000 miles on it. Last year, I was backing up, and bumped into a manhole cover which was about 9 inches high. It pushed the rear end cover into the tone ring. Took it to the dealer, they replaced the tone ring, rear end cover, and fluid. About 3 months ago, I start hearing a clicking or tapping sound coming from the rear of the truck when I am braking at speeds from 20mph down to 0 mph. The noise doesnt happen all the time, about two or three times a day. Also seems to occur more when it is raining or the road is wet. It has been to the dealer 5 times, and they cant seem to figure out what is making the noise. I have driven it with several Dodge techs, and the service manager. They have all heard it, but cant seem to diagnose it. So far they have drained fluid and inspected the inside of the rear end twice, checked all u- joints, and resurfaced the drums. I made sure they added the lim slip additive too. Neither they nor I can figure this noise out. Sounds like a deep toned clunking or clicking that only occurs at low speed braking. Does not happen during turns or cruising. It is definatley a rotational part that is making the noise because it slows down as the truck speed slows down. Is it possible that they failed to diagnose something from the manhole cover incident that has now manifested into what I am hearing? Im thinking that it could be a pinion bearing in the housing, or incorect backlash setting. Now they are waiting for a corporate rep to come in to look at it. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I hate to tell you this, but you just might have a lemon on your hands. Chrysler just bought my 02 Dak (same as yours) back from me under the CA Lemon Law because of the same problem you're experiencing. One morning, when putting the truck into drive, SLAM, and then rear-end noise. They replaced the entire rear dif, entire rear axle, and could never figure out the problem and the sound never went away. They could change the noise, but never get rid of it (and it wasn't a soft noise, but very audible at deceleration).

My attorney told me he sees lots of cases w/ Jeep and Dodge rear-end problems. Check into the Lemon Law in your area, you might have recourse to get out of it and into a new vehicle. I did.

I just had everything in my rear housing replaced a couple of weeks ago. I have '98 Dakota, 318 with a 9.25 rear, 3.55 ratio. I had about 60k mi. on it. Apparently, a pinion bearing and at least one of the carrier bearings went bad. The clutches in the posi unit were broken as well. They replaced everything including the ring and pinion gears. They told me the parts total was about $1050. Thankfully it was covered under the extended warranty.

chrysler just recently canceled their contract with Dana because of so many rear axle problems, i had a friend with a jeep grand cherokee that St. Pete Jeep had to buy back from him because they couldn't fix the rear axle from vibrating to the point of not be able to drive the thing over 60 mph, so you may have a lemon

Well this will be the 6th time to the dealer whenever they decide to call me back. Last time I called and told them it wasnt fixed, they said they will have Dodge look at it. That was about three weeks ago. Said they will call me back, still havent. Dealership is Krebs Dodge in Gibsonia PA. I know the owner, and it seems like he is trying, but I'm getting kind of tired of dropping my truck off for the same problem. Cant wait till I hit them up for the ball joints when they go. They should be about ready..11,000 miles on it now. I will keep you guys posted. Thanks for the input.
