Subject: Trailer Wiring IP: Logged
Message: Just purchased a 5x10 trailer to haul my two motorcycles around and I need help on a wiring problem. My Dak has the towing package with the seven pin hook up while the trailer has three wires, green, yellow and brown. So, I bought the necessary adapter going from the 7 to 4 as well as the 4 pin adapter with 4 wires (yellow, brown, green and WHITE) to wire to the trailer. Here the problem begins. Whats up with the white wire? The brake lights and turn signals work OK but, when I turn my head lights the trailer wires get hot fast. How about some help here. Thanks

Message: The trailer is grounded by the hitch and that's why the turn and brake lights worked, "The brake lights and turn signals work OK but, when I turn my head lights the trailer wires get hot fast." So why do the tail lights not work and why do the wires get hot. This is even after grounding the white wire back to the trailer.
Any ideas? Thanks

Message: try tracing your wires, you might either have a cross, pinch, or a bare wire somewhere grounding out.both the truck and trailer.ecspecially if its an older trailer.if not, youll prb. have to take it somewhere.i had a prb. simular to this ,and i pretty much knew it wernt the truck so i bought a new setup for the trailer, which wasnt but about $35 lights and all. took care of the prb. hope it helps

Message: There was a previous post somewhere here where the 4 pin wire white wire was connected to something like the backup lights instead of ground. This may be a similar problem. It sounds like the white wire that SHOULD be connected to ground is not. My guess is somehow the white wire is connected to the running lights +12 on the truck side.

Message: White wire is definitely the ground. Sounds like at least one of your trailer running lights is shorted to ground. Male pin on adapter should go to white wire, I've heard of people swapping truck and trailer 4 pin connecters to thwart trailer thieves, either way grumpy has your best solution.
