Subject: Battery sensor

My Dak recently was in the shop due to a engine service light issue. They said it was caused by a faulty battery ambient temperature sensor. From what I understand this sensor measures the air temperature around the battery and adjust how much the alternater should charge the battery. The sensor is located on the bottom of the battery tray. Supposedly it is supposed to increase the life of the battery. Has any one else experienced a problem with this? The dealer said they started installing this sensor in 2000.
