i have a 2001 dodge dakota quad cab with the 4.7 liter/auto. i went to start my truck to go to lunch and it took forever to for it to crank over. when it finally did, it did not idle very good at all, fluctuating between 200-1000 rpms, and sometimes died, and it would take forever to get it to crank back up again (the motor is turning over). once i FINALLY get it started, and i nail the gas, it will only go to 2500 rpms and thats it! it will not let me go any further than that. it will die if i dont keep my foot on the gas, and sometimes it still dies. it sounds like CRAP when i give it gas. i just dont understand why it would only let me go to 2500 rpms...it feels just like when you peg the speed limiter (how it kinda jerks the truck) i guess it could be the pcm? hell, ive never seen anything like this before, so if ANYBODY has a clue, or better yet; knows exactly what is wrong, i would appreciate the help.

I had a similar problem. Mine turned out to be a bad throttle body.

that sucks. i put this 70 mm on my truck in december of 2001. hopefully i can find my stock TB. what exactly was wrong with your TB? thanks for the reply

chevy for you.....i have had my share of chevys, and they are nice, but they are no different than any other vehicle on the market; they have their problems too....but thanks for the help anyways.

how do u check for codes? I dont have a diagnostic tool or anything if thats what you mean, but i will have access to one this weekend maybe.
someone pointed out to me that it may be my catalytic converter that has gone out. he recommended that i check to see if the exhaust smells like rotten eggs in the morning when i try to crank it, and to get under the truck and bump the cats with my fist, and if they rattle, then the cat is dead. sounds like a logical conclusion. if i have to, i will simply un-bolt the first cat (of 3) at the motor and just see if it will rev up past 2500 and keeps an idle and such. good news is that the cats are covered under a 8yr/100,000 mile warranty.

Now you made me feel Bad. Try a new battery. It has been hotter than a muther this summer so unless you live at the north pole, it is likely that the summer heat is putting to rest that stock dakota battery. Autozone can also scan for codes I have heard, but try battery first if you have not replaced recently.

i replaced the battery about 3 weeks ago, the stock batteries suck. i was unaware that autozone can scan for codes though. if i can get it cranked up and rolling, i will limp it to an autozone and see if they can pick up any codes. thanks for your help.

I've seen many posts about checking codes.
For 2001 you should be able to turn the key to the "on" position and then and off in sequence. On the third time turning the key on, leave on, the code (if any) should appear in the odometer display.
Anybody have some back upon this procedure? Or is this incorrect. I did this on mine and it read "P done".

thats cool, i will try that first thing in the morning (i had to leave it at my job). meanwhile, i will search the net for computer codes for this engine and print em out as my reference.

Not sure exactly what the problem was with my TB. I was just having similar issues and took it in to have it fixed under warranty. Work order said "replaced TB". Never had another problem. Yours may be a completely different problem. I was just throwing in my .02. Didn't figure it would hurt. Good luck!

Wouldn't have anything to do with battery. Definitly could be throttle body or catalytic converter. Something like that can drive you crazy. Best bet is get the codes scanned but it definitly sounds like one of above or something in ignition system or timing. Dealer will scan codes for about 35.00. At least that is what dealer here told me.

When you get the codes to come up, go to www.obdii.com and find out what code it is. I've had my fair share of probs, but at least it wasn't in the dealer every month like the pos S-10 that I had new in '95, and my dealer guy is real cool about things, he knows all my mods, hehehe.

Sorry if I was wrong about the battery, BUT I am pretty sure I read a similar problem on this board a few days ago and somebody said the 4.7L needs a strong battery charge to run properly, idle etc. It also may have been pertaining to the battery post terminal connections as well. I have the 3.9l with distributor so I am not real sure on how the 4.7 with the coil packs? operate.

well, i the only code that i managed to get was p0700-TRANS FAULT PRESENT/EATX OR AISIN TRANSMISSION CONTROLLER HAS AN ACTIVE FAULT AND HASREQUESTED MIL ILLUMINATION VIA A BUS MESSAGE TO THE SBEC/JTEC (MIL,DTC, AND FREEZE-FRAME DATA RESET FOLLOWING TRANSMISSION FAULT CLEAR.
wtf does that mean? any help is still appreciated.

ok, got a NEW code that came up. it reads as followed: P0320-crankshaft sensor circuit/no crankshaft position sensor detected during engine cranking (no timing reference signal).......wtf is that, and how the hell do i fix it? if anybody knows anything about this, please let me know...im driving a ford focus right now for Christs sake...please help! thanks.

and before you try any of that other stuff, make sure its not something simple, ive seen this before commonly the timing, check to see if its still configured correctly

I had the same prob, turned out the catalatic converter became clogged.......I took it to dealership and they somehow blew out all the crap, havent had the proplem since.... if you hear a weird ticking sound down by the exuast, when you rev, then I bet you have the same problem.
