Will the tranny from a 92 3.9L work with a 5.2L engine? I'm not sure what the year of the engine is, and this is only for a short time (until I can afford a new trans). I have a working 5.2 w/o tranny and a non-working 3.9 w/ tranny.

I'm thinking that it won't work without a lot of work. I know someone that has mated a NV3500 transmission to his Gen3 v6, but it required a lot of custom fabrication including mounts and custom driveshaft. It probably could be done, but with the money spent, it wouldn't be worth it as a temporary fix.

It will work if the bellhousing matches up. I got a 318 from the 70's and i used the 5 speed trans from the v6 engine which was stock.

I would think it would. The transmission on a V6 is a A500 and the V8 is the A518. The 518 might be longer so you might have to get a driveshaft as well. the difference between the two is the difference between a 904 and a 727. i dunno how long the 500 will last behind the 318 though.

I have the same question as I have a '92 4x4
ext.cab with the 3.9 which a buddy rolled and
now have a '92 4x4 ext.cab with the 5.2 V8. The
V8 is miles better and now it has 125,000
miles on it and no problems until the tranny
blew last night. Let me know if you need a
clean 3.9 with 64,000 miles on it .

i have a 2000 3.9 dakota and im tryin to fix it up i have headers, 1.7 aluminum rockers 50mm throttle body and a programer, but it seems to be a bit to much tourque for the trans mount. my ? is will a V8 tranny mount make it a bit stiffer or are th ey the same?

to help answer both questions, depends on your tranny type. typicly the older ones have a 727 tranny which will mate to the 3.9 (289),5.2 (318),? (340), 5.9 (360), ? (400) or anything in a small block. for the 2000 there shouldn't really be any differences that i can think of, but you can try ordering the other mount and see if it's any different although i highly doubt it.

Guys-I just changed the trans in my 1989 Shelby Dakota. It originally came with the A500 4spd OD trans, which were trouble to say the least. I replaced it with a trans from a 1992 V6 Dakota. It was a perfect fit-no mods needed. remember, the 3.9 and the 5.2 are the same block, just a 2 cylinder difference. This is the only A518 upgrade that will fit as far as I know. I had a print-out from the interchange guide that allowed only a few to interchange into the GenI Daks, and the 1992 was on that list. It is an A518, so it has the upgraded clutches inside.
I dont know what year you are trying to mate this trans to, but remember, the later year Daks had different electronics, so the transmissions had different plugs and speedo cables.

The 42RE(V6) and the 44RE(V8) is the same transmission.. only the 44RE has 2 more clutch discs in the each of the 2 clutch packs. And I believe the same goes for he older 42RH and the 44RH

i have a 97 3.9 want to put a older 318 04 360 carb....!!! can i use stock v6 tranny and tourq converter and flywheel? thanks
