Subject: Tranny trouble IP: Logged
Message: I notice this morning on my way to work that my tranny never did shift into OD. Its a 42re I believe. Its in a 95 4x4 3.9. I changed the filter and fluid about a month or so ago. Never had any other problems with it.
Thanks

Message: It's a pressure/temp sensor and when you drop the oil pan it's not that hard to change.

Message: I found the problem....Last weekend I did the TPS mod and when I tightened the TPS up I guess I got it too tight and it wouldnt return to where I set it(.72) Instead it stayed up around 2-3. This was a huge problem. Not only did my truck run terrible(I got into some bad gas and I thought that was why my truck was runnung bad)I never thought of the TPS being my problem but it really screwed things up for me. Im glad I figured it out and thanks to everyone who offered a suggestion

Message: Check to make sure all bolts are tight. A few may have backed out.
My next suggestion would be to use a higher quality gasket from an aftermarket company.

Message: They may have overtorqued the bolts to try to get it to seal and distorted the pan - might try to straighten the flanges if this is the case or replace pan.

Message: They replaced the pan once, it took about 16 months to leak again. They say they are not using a cork gasket but i think they are. This was all done at the dealership, I will not have that dealer ever work on any of my trucks or cars.

Message: If there isn't a crack somewhere then it sounds like as said above too loose or to tight.
One thing my husband does is when the pan is off he sets the lip of the pan on his bench and takes two ball pend hammers and sets the pend end on the holes and hits the hammer on the hole with the other one taking out the dimple or dimpling out. He says that pans that get over tightened will dimple up to a point where the gasket can't seal completely between bolt holes. I hope this will help and I tried to explain it the best I could.

Message: I think I will try that, What is the best way to take off the tranny pan, It looks like I need to take off the crossmember? By the way my dakota has the 4"sus lift if that makes a difference.

Message: Is that a Suspension left? If so, then you'll have a harder time jaking it up unless you got a lift.
I have a '94 4x4 Dakota (fitted with the 46RH) and I've noticed that my pan is leaking out of the front. I replaced the filter and the gasket about a year ago. And since I've been out in the field again. Thats when the leak started. You might have done the same if you went a bit to fast on a field road with a bunch of wash-outs.
