Subject: loose fan IP: Logged
Message: My truck has been squeaking a lot lately, but I can't figure out where its comeing from. today I noticed that the fan is loose, by which I mean that I can wiggle it. So now i think it may be a bearing in the water pump. Also the pitch changes when the ac compressor kicks in ,but I think that may just be because of the higher tension on the belt.
I would really apreciate some input before I go and replace anything expensive.
I have a 97 318

Message: If the pulley moves, it's a water pump.
If the fan moves, but not the pulley, you need a fan clutch.
If you replace the water pump, take the fan clutch off the pump before removing the pump.
Also, go ahead and take off the accesory bracket (A/C & alternator) so you can replace the bypass hose as well.
Get a new "O"ring for the pipe that goes into the side of the pump too.
