Message: Hey all, just wanted to tell everyone about my trip this past weekend. I dont use the overhead consoule for my milage figuring, I do it the old way.I filled up in Randall Minnesota and drove 160 miles to Cannon Falls, filled up again and it took 6.26 gallons so that is 25.55 MPG I just could not believe it. The best I have had prior to that was 18-19Mpg. I also have those good /not so good 3.55 gears! LOL!! I went to Millville and watched Carmichael & Stewart kick but.

3.55 gears. Lower gearing will kill you in fuel economy. I've got a FIPK2 intake system, which helped a bit too.

Message: Scotty
How nice is that Millville track? I'm from MN and have been meaning to get back there some year to catch the nationals there. I saw the Glen Helen national in '98 and I mean to tell you the downhills were almost not beleivable in person. To watch Carmichael and Larocco and some of the others catch air at the top then hold the throttle on most the way down doesn't seem possible. I would probably sh@t my pants just coasting and braking. LOL

Message:
Fuel economy can be very difficult for the consumer to accurately gauge.
If you fill up at a warmer part of the day one week compared to the previous week you can sometimes see a huge fluctuation in MPG just based on that.
Also, the pump may have stopped pumping at different times on different occasions, making it "seem" like you used less gallons of fuel (i.e. obtained better mileage).
--------------------------------------------------
For anyone interested in bettering their MPG, ... depending upon driving habits, conditions, and climate ... switching viscosities can improve fuel economy also. I've observed a MPG increase when switching grades (5w-30 compared to 10w-40).
It has been proven by AMSOIL, through use of industry accepted fuel economy tests, field demonstrations and as witnessed by most of our customers, that switching to synthetic oils and lubricants can (and does) improve fuel economy (MPG).

Message: Filled up last night after driving 272 miles on 14.44 gallons of fuel. That equals about 18.8MPG for everyday city driving. That's not too bad for a 4x4 and a heavy foot. I've hit 26MPG many times on the highway by only using cruise control at a constant 65MPH.

Message: BB - that's great if you're doing a lot of heavy towing, or heavy hauling in the hills. Keep in mind though, that the surcharge for the new diesel is about 5 thousand dollars over the 5.7 motor. On top of that, diesel is even more expensive to buy, than gasoline in some areas (even though its much cheaper to make). So, if you're doing light driving, how long would it take to make up 5 grand DIFFERENCE in fuel bills? Even though I like the idea of modern diesels everywhere, I don't want to have to wait 10 years to amortize the price difference between the two engines.

Message: Some Guy,
What about the trade in value of the cummins as opposed to the 5.7 years down the road. If it could hold most of the value of the price difference I think it would be worth it. I have been considering the new Ram but can't decide between the Cummins and the hemi because I can't find any gas mileage estimates. Does anyone know where I can find the figures? Also, will the HO cummins be better on mileage than the standard diesel? Any other advantages to the HO?

Message: My uncle has a 2002 Ram with The Cummins, and it will get 22-24mpg on the highway, pretty good for a fullsize 4x4. From my understanding the HO comes only with the 6-speed manual (Correct me if I'm wrong), and puts out more power. I would doubt a more powerful engine would get better gas mileage, but you never know, my guess would be about the same. I would get the HO just for the fact that its putting out more power (you can never have enough).

Message: Ok I have an 02 QC 2 wheel drive 4.7 stock except k&n drop in . I drive 32 miles each way everyday back and forth to work.. I average 18 mpg on county roads at 70 mph ( Don't tell the sheriff) I hook up our 28 foot travel trailer and still get 12 at 60, 10 at 70. All things considered that's not bad for a truck. My wifes 02 exploder 6 cyl doesn't even get 18 mpg. After all we are driving trucks not cars.

Message: Thanks Zach for the reply. I would probably go with the HO unless I have to get the manual trans. I was just surfing trying to find a decent Ram forum that is user friendly like this one (anyone know of one?) and I cam across a Ram v-10 forum and some claim that the new hemi is barely better then the v-10 gas mileage wise, and not nearly as powerful. Most were getting almost 1/2 of your 22-24mpg figure empty and anywhere from 6 to 10mpg towing with the v-10. If the hemi is not much better than that I certainly will have to get the Cummins. With how much I drive i figure only maybe 4 years to pay off the diesel price diff. plus I should have a higher trade in value when the time comes.

I love my truck....comfortable too!
ps....tire update. The Kumhos "H" rated stock size tires are great and quite. MOre road feel and stiffer sidewalls.

You want better mileage. Trade for a Honda Insight. 50 - 70 mpg ... and you want PERFORMANCE with that? Hot Rodding it would be easy. Just add a higher output generator and larger wheel motors.
For the Record:
Volvo built a Experimental Hybrid about 10 years ago that got 45 city and 55 mpg highway. If you look at a Volvo S60 ... that was the body for the car. It was a reheated Gas Turbine connected to a generator with a battery unit. The drive power came from electric wheel motors. The technology was pretty interesting. The car ran on the batteries at low speed ... like around town. When the power level dropped below a preset level the Turbine would kick on to charge the batteries. The car when driven above a certain speed would run on the Turbine / generator and when additional power was needed for high speed passing the batteries were tapped for it. I thought it was an outstanding setup, and now the Japanese are putting it on the highway.
