I guess it is just that we want our cake and be able to eat it too! To many expect when you do things to increase HP (like cold air intake ) that you should get better MPG and some manufacturers even claim it but the plain simple truth is if you increase air flow or density the fuel delivery will increase. You can't produce more HP without burning more fuel unless you do things to cut down on friction etc:

The thing that really burns me up is the way the oil companies are allowed to rob the consumer. Have you noticed that every time a holiday gets close the gas prices begin to soar. I mentioned this to a clerk at local Shell station when I filled up yesterday and she said " Oh no, there is a shortage right now. That is why the price has went up. " Well I'll bet you a tank of gas that after Labor Day the shortage will be over and prices will start to slowly drop again. At least it always has in the past, although it may not drop back to what it was. They Like to get it as close to $2.00 as they can so when they drop it to $1.65 we think we are getting a break.

Unbelievable!!!!

You can in fact increase mileage by increasing
compression and adjusting spark better; to just
before the point pinging/predetonation occurs.
(As well as varying intake plenum lengths
according to RPM, so that the harmonics of the
air flow are optimized for slow or fast RPM).
Diesels have better mileage largely because of
much higher compression. Increasing compression
in gas motors also increases the production of
NOx emissions however, which in this day & age
is a no-no, so they back away from it.

Dak engines are designed to work on lower-grade
gasoline, that requires lower compression and
less spark advance, as well as being programmed
to spit out lower NOx emissions. The stock air
intake is also a compromise between the best hi
and low RPM configurations, because it doesn't
change according to RPM. These are all big
reasons for the low mileage.

If you set up the motor to have higher
compression (pistons or super- or
turbo-charging) and better spark advance, and
re-programmed the chip to be able to use this
and to ignore emissions, you'd get a lot better
mileage per horsepower output. You'd have to
use more expensive gas though. Adding an
equivalent of VANOS would help too.

Personally, I'd just go with a modern diesel if
I could get it, and learn to appreciate higher
torque at constant RPM rather than 1/4-mile
times, but that's just me :)

OTOH, ignore the part about turbo-charging,
there's other stuff going on there that would
confuse the issue.

On my recent trip to vermont I got some of my best mileage numbers ever. Truck is 04 Quad r4.7 V8/5speed auto, 4x4, 3.55 gears, 245/70/16 tires with soft tonneau that stayed down the whole trip.Up until then my mileage never hit 15, the best was high 14s with mostly short trips of a couple minutes city and a couple minutes highway.

On the trip up:

Steady 70-75 with occasional short bursts to 80, highway almost all the way: 17.5.

NExt tank: About 260 miles of curving one lane country roads with no stop lights to speak, infrequent bursts of heavy gas. Next 100 miles after that were steady 65-75 mpg, very infrequent accelaration: 17.8.

Last tank: Balls to the wall, full throttle, Im tired and I want to get the hell home: Cruising at 80-85 with frequent full throttle bursts to 90 or above: 16.3.

Im now on the next tank after that and am at about 150 miles at only slightly over a quarter tank. This is now normal driving, once per week drives to my parent's house all highway and mostly work commute, which is 5 minutes of city driving and two minutes of highway. Id call it a 60/40 highway split. If I can manage 15-16 on this tank of normal driving I'll be real happy. I think 20 on the highway may well be possible too, as those two best tanks were both never under 70 mph.

Every time I get annoyed I remind myself my Dak takes only about 10 bucks more to fill at these prices than my Ranger would have an the range is only a little bit less.

eddy,

Just curious...did you do anything to your truck to get the better mileage or did it just get better on its own? I have almost the exact same truck as you, except with 3.92 and AWD. I get about 14.5-14.7 mpg with about 1600 miles on it.

quote from some one":BB - that's great if you're doing a lot of heavy
towing, or heavy hauling in the hills. Keep in
mind though, that the surcharge for the new
diesel is about 5 thousand dollars over the 5.7
motor. On top of that, diesel is even more
expensive to buy, than gasoline in some areas
(even though its much cheaper to make).

So, if you're doing light driving, how long
would it take to make up 5 grand DIFFERENCE in
fuel bills? Even though I like the idea of
modern diesels everywhere, I don't want to have
to wait 10 years to amortize the price
difference between the two engines".

This is very true. I thrive off the suckers that trade in at 20-25,000 miles. Price on the truck goes from 40+ to 18-20,000. The last on I bought for 1,200 and been driving for 12,000 miles already. Some prefer not to buy used.

PLL, just a tonneau, but I feel the change from that was negligible at best, maybe 1-2 mpg. The real difference was I picked the truck up in OCT justy before it got cold. So break-in period came during the Winter, which I know is not exactly ideal. I think the motor got looser right about when it warmed up outside, so those two factors are the main ones that improved the mileage. In the dead of winter I was getting 11.9-12.8 though, and this was highway and city together. THAT was a little nerve wracking, wondering if that would get better.
