Subject: 5 speed software in a 4 speed? IP: Logged
Message: The 45RFE trans in a new Dakota(Gen 3?) is the same hardware as the Gen 2. The Gen 3, 4.7 A/T advertises a 5 speed, to get the additional "gear" all that is done is lock the torque converter in 3rd.
Is there anybody that has converted the software/ controller to work with an older 4 speed? (2000)
I could really use a 3rd gear with lockup for towing; when it just won't hold 4th gear.

Message: So---- if nobody has done this... has anyone looked into it.... or is anyone interested?
Have you guys with the 5-45 RFE transmission found the 3rd gear lockup to be helpful when towing large/heavy trailers?

Message: I'm not 100% certain, but I "think" you can get your transmission control computer reflashed to the 545RFE program since they are basiclly the same (or exactly the same) internally. I do not remember if anyone has done it or not, though...

Message: The problem is--- when flashing, if the new part# does not supercede the old #, that's it - end of road- do not pass go, do not collect $200
Two options that I have come up with are.....
1)Install a 5-45 RFE controller and see if everything works <---- $$$ for a maybe & will the PCM recognize the change as bad?
2)Flash my current controller(with correct # flash) and abort after erasure phase.
That will leave a NR (no response) TCM.
Then do a recovery of the controller and try to load a 5-45 RFE flash into it. I don't know how receptive these things are to new programs and part #'s after a abort and recovery. <--- May be unable to recover and have to buy a TCM anyway; and will the PCM recognize the change as bad?
I'll send out some feelers in other directions and see if this has been done before..
