Has any one swapped an Instrument cluster with out the tach for one with the tach? A dealor I went to today said it wasn't possible as my body controller would not support it. Is there any truth to this?

An almost identical question was asked by a reader in the July 2001 issue of Truckin' magazine. In a nutshell, the editor's reply was that the wiring harness doesn't contain the wires for the tach, and simply swapping in a different instrument cluster wouldn't solve the problem. He went on to say that swapping a wiring harness from a donor truck with the tach would be possible, but would likely require an electrical engineer to make it work. His suggestion was to get an aftermarket tach. To be fair, the question referenced a 1990 Chevy, but the same is likely true for your truck. After spending about 30 minutes in my service manual looking for info on how the tach is controlled and how the data gets to the instrument cluster, I gave up. I'd get an aftermarket tach.

I dont know everything ive read says its all in the PCM on the ccd bus

-------

SYSTEM OPERATION
The tachometer gives an indication of the engine speed in revolutions-per-minute (RPM) . The instrument cluster circuitry controls the gauge pointer position. The instrument cluster circuitry calculates the proper gauge pointer position based upon engine speed messages received from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) on the Chrysler Collision Detection (CCD) data bus.

The PCM uses an input from the crankshaft position sensor and internal programming to calculate what engine speed messages are required. The PCM then sends the proper messages to the instrument cluster on the CCD data bus. The crankshaft position sensor is a hall-effect sensor installed near the rear of the engine, where it is aimed at the trigger wheel attached to the rear flange of the crankshaft.

-------

Looking at the wiring diagram and the conector pin outs there is nothing about tach or speedo. Just the ccd bus and some switches and lamps. I thought I had read a post somewhere that some one did a swap. I relly want to swap mine rather than go after market. But Il have to find one in a junk yard because paying $700+ from the dealor is out of the question!

how hard would it be to install an aftermarket tach? like an external one. would the wiring be diffucult?
thanks

After looking more into this I did find some one who swapped theirs out but the bad news was the odometer from the other cluster showed up. I thought that was stored in the pcm. Now onto the aftermarkey tach. I dnot know about the wiring, I wonder about placement.

Ohh well I think ill just line-x my bed instead. I have a drop in right now thats rubbed the heck out of the bed.

I’m interested in detailed workings of the CCD bus (protocol, message length etc.)
How would one go about finding this information?

Thank You

I'm contiplating doing this to my 91, the odometer is NOT digital, IT WAS an option in 91, wondering if the wiring harness already has the wires for a tach. I would much perfer the factory look.

The instrument panel swap from a 1989 w/tach to 1989 wo/tach is possible and works just fine.
