Subject: vehicle speed sensor 91-96 8 1/4 rearEnd IP: Logged
Message: I was talkin to someone and they said that the vehicle speed sensor is located in the rear end on the newer 97+ dakotas. Is this true on the 91-96 rear ends? If so is there anyway around it? Im lookin to swap a 91-96 rear end into my 2000 dak so any help on this would be greatly appreciated
Thanks,
Ryan

Message: The speed sensor wasn't put into the rear end until 1998. I don't know of a way around that. The other thing to consider is that a 91-96 rear end is about 2" narrower - which might be good or bad depending on what you are trying to do.

Message: Where was that sensor put in the 97 and 98 model years. Maybe it would be easy to follow teh setup they did in those years. Also what exactly does it affect? speedo?
thanks

Message: If you don't mind a shameless plug, I'm selling the stock rear out of my '95. 3.55 and limited slip, complete drum to drum. $150 takes it away.

Message: It was put in the rear starting in '98. Prior to that, it's in the tailshaft of the tranny. Instead of a "speed sensor" you have a gear that has a certain number of teeth corresponding to your tire height and rear end gear ratio. If you change your rear ratio i.e. 3.21 to 3.55, etc., then you buy a new speedo gear to correspond to the swap.

Message: Let me know how it goes. If you could get your hands on a an older factory service manual (96 or 97 would be the best since they are also OBD-II PCM's like your truck)as well as an '00 manual for your own truck, you could probably piece together what you would need for the job. You would need to fool your stock computer or perhaps run an older PCM that isn't looking for an input from that rear end speed sensor.

Message: currently i have 3.55s open so i guess i wouldnt need a new speedo gear i take it. Also my tire height is almost exactly stock size. but about this tailshaft of the tranny stuff dont know what do do about that.
