Subject: 4-speed trans trouble IP: Logged
Message: Could anyone tell me what transmission is in my 91 Dakota? It's two wheel drive with a 318. The data tag is gone and all the wisdom a dealer could impart on me is that it is a four speed automatic.
Also, how does a torque converter work? If I turn the outer, larger set of splines inside the converter the smaller, inner set doesn't turn, am I correct to assume the torque converter is stripped out?
Obviously I'm not up on automatic transmissions and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Message: The transmission is probably a 518A or a 500.
Check out www.howstuffworks.com for info on how torque convertors work.

Message: Thanks for the help. The website really helped me to understand torque converters. Pulled the oil pan off and there is lots of brass type metal in the bottom. Also the water well pump in my house went out today. Looks like the Dakota project is on the back burner until I can gather further funding.
