Subject: towing with an R/T IP: Logged
Message: im gong to be selling my 2wd V6 to get something to tow a 5500 lb boat and trailer...
ive looked up towing capacities for year 2000 vehicles and i see that dakotas R/T is only 2000
is that because an option for a hitch/towing package was not available...
where can i go aftermarket to get a hitch?
if i cant go with an R/T...i might be stuck with a 4.7 or 5.2

Message: at any trucker store...im pretty sure even places like autozone sell em...make sure u get the class 3 hitch though...dont even waste time with a class 2...but when u do it will bolt right onto ur frame and that 2000lb towing capsity goes bye bye...

Message: the rt towing rating is low because it has a different suspension, towing rating is not based on the hitch that comes with the truck

Message: it is 2000lb at the hitch...yes that is lower because of the suspension also, but i also know of many R/T's pulling 5500lb plus with no problem...

Message: the trailer ball and bumper are only rated at 2000 lbs and that is what limits trailering capabilities... right?
will a class III hitch be different from a regular dak to a R/T?
anyone know off hand how much a hitch costs?

Message: kryp,
You didn't mention it, so I thought I would.
The factory towing package, is more than a hitch on the frame.
My 01 4.7, 5spd, quad Cab, with the trailer towing, came with a Class 4 hitch.
You'll need a good tranny cooler, (cause the r/t's are only automatics.)
You'll need the set up for the electric brake in the 7 point harness for the wires, which also includes a full time 12v accesory line for lights, etc., on/in what you're towing. A surge brake in the hitch is another option.
A higher putput alternator, a higher amp battery.
Better brakes, the list goes on.
Sure you could could just even put a ball on the bumper and go fot it, of just a reciever hitch bolted to the frame, etc.
The choice is yours. If I were pulling something that substantial, very far, with friends and family along perhaps, I'd want all the right equipment.
Good luck

Message: Don`t waste your time with the R/T if you`re planning on towing something that heavy.
You can get the 5.9 (even with a 5-speed if you want) in a 4X4 , and then you could tow anywhere you want with no problems.

Texas Todd is right. The rating is much more than tounge weight and horse power. The R/T has plenty of power for what your looking to pull, but stopping that much weight in a truck like that is going to be an adventure. Being "stuck" with the 4.7 is certainly not a bad thing. R/T's are awesome trucks, but they are made for speed which makes them a little less versatile then a normal truck.
