Subject: Synthetic Oil NV3500 how much?
IP: Logged

Message:
Getting ready to change to Synthetic oil in 5 speed, how much does it take. My manual says not to use anything other than Mopar but I know from here that you can use synthetic's. Also want to replace axle oil too.

99 CC 5.2 5 speed

In the 2001 Dakota factory manual it states
2.28 Liters or 4.8 pints as the capacity of the NV-3500 tranny.

Read the FSM closer. 2wd NV3500's get closer to 3 quarts, 4wd get closer to 2 quarts.

Okay, I looked at the 2001 Dakota Factory Service Manual. Again. Under Specifications / Fluid Capacities , and it clearly states for the NV3500 manual transmission as I have stated above, 2.28L or 4.8 pints. It does not differentiate between 4wd or 2wd.

No matter how close I keep looking at it it's always the same.

Just relaying what's in print.

The tranny has nothing to do with a 4x4 or 4x2.

Page 0-1 of my 2002 Dakota FSM. Manual transmission, NV3500, approximate dry fill or fill to bottom edge of the plug fill hole:

4x2 - 2.28L (4.8 pts.)
4x4 - 1.98L (4.18 pts.)

No way the 4X4 takes 1.98L. When I changed my tranny oil on my 4X4 I went through almost 2.5 quarts of oil which was just below the fill hole.

Something just doesn't make sense??

Bottom line Walter still needs 3 quarts to do the oil change, so he will have enough no matter what.
