Subject: 2001 Dakota engine idle/missing problem IP: Logged
Message: Recently my 2001 Dakota with 42K miles has been idling rough and missing. The check engine light came on. I brought it to my mechanic and the code came back as missing cylinder #5. He changed the spark plugs (which he said were pretty dirty on that side), rotor and cap. Reset the computer. The next day the light came back with the same code. He replaced the injector in cylinder #5. The engine smoothed out somewhat but not what it was. A day and a half later the light came back on with the code for missing cylinder #3. The engine was missing and idling rough again. He thinks it is another injector, is there anyone that has this or similar problem or can anyone give me some advice?????? HELP

Message: Could be bad spark plug wires. #3 and #5 are next to each other so they may be cross firing. Try separating these two cylinder wires to see if that helps. (re route them so that they are not close together).
Good luck

Message: The code "missing cylinder #5" isn't listed in the diagnostic manual. The dealer didn't give you the exact code that he found did he? There are many codes codes that relate to cylinder #'s that have to do with injectors, coils and misfiring. If you get the actual code it will help define closer.

Message: This is a reply to my own original message. I finally resolved the problem myself without the dealer. I went to a dealer and they couldnt take me right away and gave me a sight unseen est. of $1000. if it was the injectors. I took my truck home and bought a set of spark plug wires. After I replaced them I removed the coil wire and the cable at the distributor side fell out of the connector. The inside of the connector was cabonized and the contact was completely rusted. I have never seen anything like this has anybody? My truck runs great now but still $500. spent for no reason.

Message: Bernie, if I was you, I would fight for a refund. Thats total BS. Show him the parts and ask them what kind of chop shop are they running here. Don't leave the place without a refund. If that doesn't work, I would be calling the service manager everday on the hour, every hour until you get refund.

Message: Don't be an ass about it when you go back and talk to them. They're obviously not going to want to refund your $ so you should get in contact w/the regional rep if the service manager doesn't help, which he probably won't, file a complaint with the BBB, and file a complaint with the state attorney's office if the service manager and regional rep won't help you

Message: Thanks for the advice. Will do. Does anybody have any idea how something like this could have happened? Could the coil be at fault? Or is there another electrical problem that could occur?
thanks
