Subject: Cat Rattle on 97 3.9L IP: Logged
Message: I've done a quick search on these boards and seems to be a common problem- my cat converter is rattling away, sounds like it's gonna come off.
1997, 3.9L, 110K miles, so it's outta warranty.
I took it to my local backyard mechanic, he says he can replace it for $400 or "gut it" or cut it out for around $150. I've seen rumors that the loss of backpressure may harm my engine (I am admittedly not a mechanic, I have no idea) I've also read posts on other cars that the passenger compartment can start to smell without the cat in place.
My main question is this, if he guts it or removes it, am I going to harm my truck? Is it gonna stink? Will the exhaust be much louder?
Or am I better of with replacing the thing.
Thanks for the help.

Message: Your cat should be covered by an EPA-mandated extended emissions warranty, independent of mfr warranty.
Check it out at your dealer.

Message: The emissions warranty ends at 8years 80,000 miles I belive.
I have seen a few come through the shop with a straight pipe in place of the cat. They did'nt appear to have any problems.
It will be louder, but nothing that a decent muffler can't cure.
But..... if you have emissions testing in your area..... you know what ya gotta do.
If you plan on keeping your truck forever or selling it to a private party eventually, you can do without a cat.
If you trade to a dealer, they will have to put on back on before selling it. It may result in post-sale troubles for you.
If you have a downstream o2 sensor, it will probably throw a code. I think there are aftermarket products to remedy this situation.

Message: thanks for the replies. I don't plan on selling it any time soon, i don't have emissions testing, but I don't know if it has a downstream O2 sensor, I guess I'll have to ask.
is $400 reasonable for putting on a new cat?

Message: Check out Magnaflow high flow cats, they are going to be a little louder but in a good way, I paid 169.00 canadian for a SS (5X8 I think) 2 1/2 in-out that's much better then the stock price. just an option.

Message: I got my High-Flow Cat through Summit Racing. It was about $120.00. My cat went out at around 70,000 Miles. But I didn't go to the dealer I just bought one through Summit, Along with a Flow-Master Muffler 1 in 2 out. That was about 2 years ago. I haven't had a problem yet, and I get that question You got a V-8 in that thing???
Nope 3.9 V-6.
