Message: Ok, I need some of you guys who have done a custom rear disk conversion to tell me what works as far a parts (year, brand, etc...) I want to put this on my truck (2000 RC, 2wd) and i'm not going to pay $750 or $1200 bucks for a kit that from the pictures I've seen I could probably fabricate myself. I'm just looking to benefit from someones experience as far what really works on a daily driver, not for any special purpose like racing. Anything you guys come up with will be appreciated.(I think we could use the calipers from the front of the truck, but the spacers and backer plate would probably have to be made from scratch, and I really don't know about the valve for the master cylinder(does this affect ABS?) I think this would benefit many of us since the companies who do make conversions want the equivalent of our firstborn children!

The calipers are from a ford thunderbird I believe. Really happy with the kit though. Your probably better off buying the kit. To many parts to try to just fabricate and the cost of fabricating.

Message: Be careful! Changing over is not as simple as bolting in a rear end from a totaled Dakota. There are differences in the proportioning valve and perhaps more. I would agree though that 4 wheel discs is a vast improvement.

Message: This is what I'm talking about, if there are things that are"special" like the proportioning valve lets find out and share the info.I would try myself but I figured some of you guys have friends at the dealership or work there yourself and could find out diffeneces in parts #'s and such. IF we can buy most of the parts and fabricate the rest(backer plates and spacers) then we have all the answers.

Message: You only have to make small modification to the proportioning valve. I'll share the info, but this is only to be done for those with rear disc not drums. DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK, I assume no responsibility if you mess something up.
Remove the retaining bolt from the rear of the valve then slowly remove the piston then pull the spring. Next take the piston and snap it onto the retaining bolt, yes it does this, and replace the setup. Doing this allows more pressure to the rear discs drastically reducing your stopping distance and improving your stopping power. Once again don't attempt this unless you have the kit or some other type of rear disc setup, but don't try this with the drums or damage may result, as stated in my directions for the kit.
Hope this helps you some,
Michael

Message: So whats wrong with the rear drum brakes anyway?I find my brakes overall are pretty good front discs and 11 inch drums work just fine for my 01 4x4 Dak.

Message: I agree, my 01 has drums and performs fine, I mean if your tracking the truck then disc conversion could help you but a rotor upgrade up front would be money better spent

Message: Not really team fast, putting disc on the back and equalizing the brakes almost entirely eliminates nose dive when braking and the system seems more responsive and you have more control. Thats from my experience with my SSB Kit. Anyway do a search for rear disc conversion to see why I made the switch.
Thanks,
Michael

Message: By the way, my truck came with the larger drums that were part of the towing package. Along with the LSD and hitch, 7-way round and maximum engine cooling.

Message: But is reduceing nose diving worth all that work? and not to mention money? I would have to drive it to see, but 0-60 times impress me more, even though 60-0 is important too.
