Message: Picked up a 90 dakota with 3.9, love the truck, had it two weeks and drove from s. fla to mystic conn pulling a car on a trailer and averaged 17 mpg and 21 on the trip back with no towing. Problem is that the abs and brake light both have come on, at first it came on and then went out after about five minutes and then a few days later came on and now stays on. This started about a week after my trip with no loads in the bed or towing any thing. Brakes feel normal and fluid is up to the top. Is there a computer hook up to check the exact problem or is it a hit and miss game. I disconnected the battery for a couple of minutes and that did not do the trick. Any help will be apreciated. Thanx neal

Message: Neal,
A man I can confide in! I have '95 Dak and have dealt with that problem since new. About once to twice every two weeks. I've heard a few things about it saying it happens randomly and means when the ABS/e-brake lights are on your ABS is not working and I've also heard it is just a minor computer malfunction. I would like to know for sure. My dad has a '98 Dak and it went on after towing a trailer with it for about a year. Dealer said brakes were going, I've never towed so I don't know what's going on?

Message: Funny, that same thing happened to me last week on my 1989 Dakota. I currently need to have my rotors turned, and I'm not sure if that is the problem the computer is detecting. You might consider doing yourself a favor and performing a self diagnistic engine analysis test using the CHECK ENGINE light. This test is good for all Pre-1997 Dakotas.
http://www.geocities.com/Baja/Desert/1727/FaultCodes.html
This will allow your computer to display any fault codes that will tell you what any problems may be occurring, if it can detect any.
My problem just sorta went away after it was on for about 5 minutes. I dont know why or how, as I didnt do anything about it.

Message: I have a 92 dakota and the same thing happened to me, I've taken it in and the computer showed no error, if you notice brake troubles you may try reseting your proportioning vavle located on the frame on the driver side behind the wheel, but if no brake troubles, open the dash and clip the wire, if it really bugs you

Message: Something similar happened to my son's '99 R/T. He was told (get this) it is the speedometer sensor that is mounted on the rear end. He was told to clean it and if that didn't work to change it. He cleaned it and the problem got worst. He changed it (~$30) and the problem went away. This may not be the same thing but I figured I'd throw it out to you guys just in case it is.

Message: I've got a 2000 Ram 5.9l and mine did the same thing while I was driving to Dallas. Brake and ABS light both came on. I jumped all over my brakes to see if the ABS was working...and it's not. I'll try some of these things. Thanks!

Message: You could also have air in the brake lines around the ABS sensor. I had this problem on my 93, and I just had to bleed the brakes in the rear to take care of it. Brakes felt normal otherwise.

replacing the speed sensor will solve your problems!!
or take the lights out of your dash you dont need ABS anyway you will get stopped quicker with out that thing kicking in...

Message: the wire that plugs in to the sensor on the housing gets dirty/corrided and losses connection, try cleaning and replace
remove battery terminal to clear codes,
this should turn lights off dash,
dealer told me daks are noted for this problem,
to decode the older daks turn the ignition key on/off,on/off,on count the anti-lock flashes
this will give you the code,
now you just need the code break down to tell you the problem
i think this works on 88-95 after that your guess

Message: I have a 1989 dakota with the 3.9 V-6. The ABS and the Brake Light are on, and when I exceed 60 mph, the speedometer starts to jump. I put the engine's computer into diagnostic mode to read the fault codes, nothing about the speed sensor in mentioned. The brakes feel great. Fluid is topped off. What else could I do?

Message: I had the same problem, and i fixed it. check the Output Speed Sensor(OSS). on the top of the rear axle. It's a magnetic sensor that goes bad often because of tiny metal shavings ataching to the magnet and screwing things up. There's also another similiar sensor on the bottom of the tail end of the transmission has a history of the same problem. both sensor's should run about $25 each or so at the dealership and are easy enough to replace on your own. I deinetly recomend at least pulling both sensor's out from time to time though, it's very easy to tell by looking at the tips if there covered in metal shavings or not. good luck.
