Go to

http://www.dakota-truck.net/CODES/codes.html

There is a section on how to get trouble codes and how to interpret them.

It is my understanding that you will have this code until after 50 starting cycles. It doesn't do any harm and your check engine light shouldn't come on just because of code 12.

Is your Dakota acting strangely in any way? Is the check engine light still on?

My check engine light has been coming on and off since about 56,000 miles as well. During this time my transmission screwed up and wouldn't come out of first gear. I thought the transmission was gone but it turned out that the switch in the transmission that tells it when to switch was out and that had to be replaced. It only cost me $277.00 and that included a general transmission service. The mechanic thought that should have taken care of the check engine light and in fact I thought it had for a few days, but then it came back on again. I don't know what it is and I don't want to take it to the dealer because they charge so much - but I might have to if I want the light to go away and make sure there's no problems.
