Message: Can you describe your home brew intake? I'm thinking of doing one for myself. I read most that do there own and they work as well as the expensive ones but cheaper. Did you get the filter to pull in air from outside of the engine compartment? If not that might be your problem. There is someone on this site that put together one that went down to an area just in front of the wheel well but protected by the bumper and plastic part of the wheel well. He used ABS tubing and a cone filter. It looked good I plan on using the same basic design but use 3" mandrel bent exhaust tubing and welding the seams and paint it to dress it up a bit.

Message: I went to the homedepot and got some 3" black pvc tubing and a k&n round air filter screwed the parts together and made a shield around the filter but I think that it's getting hot air from the motor so I'm going to rethink the whole process.

Message: Some ol coffin dodger posted here about PVC releasing mustard gas, agent orange or whatever if it gets hot and catches on fire. Pick your materials wisely.

Message: The only way PVC is gonna melt down is if it is within a few inches of a manifold. Most "normal" people dont pull a ricer and run 7ft of air tube to the under bumper area. I ve had mine for 3 years now, also live is south FLA where its hot year round, and I have never had a single problem with my PVC. Just thought Id mention that. Later

Message: How much did your MPG drop? A slight drop will be normal, as you increase air intake your sensors will also increase fuel consumption to keep the air/fuel mixture right. The same is true with cold air intakes, cold air is more dense and will increase fuel consumption slightly. This will happen with any increase of air flow.

Message: The MPG on my 2001 RC 4.7 5-spd. 3:92 went from 18.5 to 19.0 overall (city/hwy) with 3" aluminum tubes between the throttle body and stock air box, K&N drop-in (already in the 18.5 figure), Fernco 4" in place of the snorkel inlet, and rubber flap removed. About 10,000 miles on this setup; still sweet. Compounds the benefit of the Flowmaster 70 2 1/2" dual exhaust as well.

here's mine, no problems with gas mileage, went up if anything
your problem might be getting into the gas more and therefore your mpg went down
