Subject: Rotors & pads - Best replacement parts??
IP: Logged

Message:
I need new rotors bad (warped)... as do most Dakota owners from what I understand.
I want to know from personal experience what replacement pads and rotors Dakota owners have had good luck with?
I have found lots of threads that discuss the problem but few that offer combos that work long term.
Please give me specific examples of pads and rotors that resist warping, squeaking and work well in general.
THANKS!!!

From the research I did on here I went with the Powerslot Rotors and Raybestos severe duty Carbon metallic pads. I will be installing them tommorow so I can't respond on long term usage. But they have to be better than the crap that is installed from the factory. Mine were warped at 5,000 miles.

I'm with Andy on this one. However, I used Hawk performance pads instead of Raybestos. I'm happy with it and my 99 cc stops right friggin now with em.

I just received my EBC 6000 extra duty brake pads from the Tirerack. It was the most aggressive pad available and was supposed to increase fade resistance, lower brake dust, and stop better than the junky factory pads which started squeaking at 11,000 miles. These pads were $68 shipped. For good rotors you'll probably spend $240-$250. Slotted / dimpled rotors are supposed to be the hot ticket. Cross drilled rotors can crack. check out www.tirerack.com for performance brake options and also technical advice. Or go all out and install the Viper rotor/caliper kit.
Good luck in your shopping and I hope this helps.

Same problem here. I plan to get power slot or cross drilled rotors (dissapte heat better). A friend swears by ceramic pads so I think that's what I'll get (no squeaking or dust).

Hey, what's involved with installing the Viper kit? Just curious - is there a 'kit in a box' or does it have to be piece-mealed together?

A word on drilled / slotted rotors:
From what I understand, slotted and/or drilled/dimpled rotors do not dissipate heat better. Their advantage is that they wipe the surface of the pad clean and allow for the gasses produced during braking to escape. Any time you remove mass from the rotor, your heat induced problems (warp, fade, etc) will be worse. Drilled rotors are much more suseptible to cracking and warp than regular solid rotors for this reason - although they do perform better in wet weather....

Hey OZ I was ready to put PowerSlot rotors and Hawk pads on my truck. I found out about Bosch rotors and pads. They come with 5 year's on the rotors and lifetime on the pads. They set me back $160.00 for pads and rotors. If you have a Murray's in the area you get a $35.00 rebate. They stop great only time will tell if the rotors will warp, I've got 5 years. Good luck.

I haven't heard of the Bosch set up. Are these new?

I like the warranties (especially the 5 years on the rotors).

Are the pads the "low dust" type? Do you have parts numbers?

Thanks

Bill

I found out about them from a friend that has him on a '97 Dakota. He loves them so I did some research. They are made in Canada and the quality looks very good to me. The guy at the auto part store told me they are very high quality as well, take it for what it's worth. I have a 2002 Quad Cab 4x4 part numbers are:
RBP820 for the Premium Pads
RBR5382 for the rotors
They also offer ceramic pads for my truck which I believe are low dust they were $20.00 more than the Premium. Because of the noted problems with front rotors the 5 year warranty is what sold me.

JimC,
Yes I do have a Murray's near me (you must live in Michigan too)... I will definitely look into these. I can't imagine them offering a 5 year warranty. I wonder what's covered (probably cracking, defects not caused by use, etc)???
I may pony up for the better pads. A friend who is knowledgeable in brakes recommended the Performance Friction Carbon Metallic. I will have to look into the ceramic pads a little more before going with them though.

I asked that same questions on rotor warranty. I was told 5 years no questions asked if they fail or warp.

I can give you a little insight on Performance Friction pads. They stop great once they warm up. Not to good when they are cold. That's my experience check it out.

I just put on the Powerslot/Hawk combo on the front. The truck stops now like it should have all along!

$262 shipped from truck performance center. I have 47,000 miles and the stock rotors had been turned twice, so anything HAS to be better than stock.

It stops light years better, so I'm very happy.

Those viper brakes i think are a piece together kit but could you imagine how cool it would be.?!
check out www.gsmotorsports.com - they fit 97' - 03' daks and durangos. also www.dakota-durango.com has a pretty fair listing of brake upgrades. just click on the "brakes" in the "other parts" section towards the bottom of the home page. they have some pics of the viper brakes on some daks. It's like brake jewlery.

Installed EBS slotted/dimpeled rotors and EBS 6000 pads. Obviously an easy install and work like a champ...although I get a squeal when really hot...wife noticed a big improvement too...the truck that is..not her squealing!!

I just replaced my front brakes with the powerslot / hawk combo. NOW the truck seems to shudder and I get some vibration/pulsing in the peddle (slight and mainly at high speed braking (highway).
I followed the 'seating' process as best I could. I re-adjusted the rear brakes which seemed to help - but only after 100 or so miles of being a little tight perhaps. Would this have warped the rear drums? But what about the fronts? Could they warp straight out of the gate?

Thanks,
Julian

Im needing new brakes on my 98 Durango. I was wondering what anyone thought on the Powerslots?? i mean i could go thru a couple $50 Brembo regular rotors before i hit the $100+ price of the Powerslots...do the powerslots last alot longer and can they be turned...wouldnt that wipe off the slots? I think ill be going with either Hawk pads or some EBC or the heavier duty Suv version of them. Any help or comments would be appreciated. Thanks.
