Subject: Front Pads at 24,000?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 02 CC 4x4 V8 and I only have 24,000 something miles on it. Brought it in to the dealer this morning for a "Malfunction Indicator Light" (check engine light) but the manual calls it that. Turns out the gas cap had a bad seal and they replaced it. But now they are saying my front pads need to be replaced and the rotors are warped. I never noticed the pulsating they described. But the price seems right $190 to replace the pads and machine the roters.

Any comments?

Thanks.

You might want to get some good after market pads and rotors and have a mechanic you know do the work.

Besides that...from what I understand you can't tell if the rotors are warped unless you actually do a test on them which most places charge you for. Get a second opinion. Dealerships suck.

Hey Matt,
I have a 2000 Regular cab with 45,000 miles on it and the front pads still have plenty on them. Yes I know that your truck weighs more, but they should not be worn out at 24,000 miles. I use to do brakes at a dealership and the Dakota's front rotors are very easy to take off compared to other trucks. If you have the right tools you could take them off yourself and have the rotors turned at a local shop for around $20-$30. Then you could go to a parts store and get the pads, if you need them. All said and done, you should have less than $100 in them if you do it yourself. Just remember one thing: Work at a slow pace and remember to put everything back where it goes.
I would also go get another opinion on the brake pads before you start, because some of the mechanics will tell you that they need to be replaced if they are over halfway worn. That is a common practice for them to get more business.
Also, I have had to get my rotors turned twice since I got my truck new, so that does not seem too unusual to me.

I work at a Dodge dealership. The price is too high and I bet you do not need pads. I would not be surprised if the rotors are warped, but I bet the pads are fine.

When I swapped my pads and rotors for the first time at 40K miles, I still had 50~ish% of my pads left! The rotors were absolutely shot, though.

I recently traded in my 2000 QC for a 2003. My pads lasted me almost 55K miles. My rotors never warped, but the indicators on the pads failed and I ended up metal to metal. Checked the rotors and they were shot; too thin to turn. Oh well, 55K was more than I expected anyways. Just a side note: if you've got rear drums, have them adjusted whenever you can (i.e. oil changes & tire rotations). Even though the front brakes do most of the stopping, adjusting the rear brakes will help to extend the life of the front ones - just what I was told.

Had to have new front rotors (warpped bad) and pads at 30,000. The pads had rusted the little retaining clips off and were rattling big time. The brakes are junk on these trucks IMHO. Please no flmaes, but my 99' Silverado had GOOD brakes. However the rest of the truck was crap. I'll take the bad brakes any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
