Subject: 3.7L V6 a 2002 motor? IP: Logged
Message: Can anyone confirm (or deny) that the new 3.7L V6 (based on the 4.7 design) will actually appear in the 2002 model year? I'm looking at buying a new 2001 Dak. Want the 4.7, but can't find it in a 5-spd. Dealers say it'd be a special order 2002 model, avail. in late Aug. early Sept. I might just wait and hold out for the 3.7 IF??? it's actually going to be avail. at the beginning of the 2002 model year (Aug/Sept). The only CONFIRMED reports I've been able to find about this motor is that it'll be offered in 2002 RAMs. I've found no mention as to if/when it'll appear in the Dakota.

Message: I'm almost positive the new 3.7L will be available in the 2002 Dakotas. DC is discontinuing the 3.9L and 5.9L in the 2002 Dakotas, but the 5.9L will still be available in the Rams, if I remember correctly.
If I were you I wouldn't get the new 3.7L but stick with the 4.7L because it will have more HP than last years - I think 240 to 245 HP, but I've heard all the way up to 270 HP.

Message: Jay,
I found an article relating to the 4.7L power increase at http://www.car-truck.com/chryed/buzz/b111999.htm. It's an old article so take it for what it's worth.
It says it's for the Jeep Grand Cherokee, but as we know the Dakota and the Grand Cherokee share the same engines, so my guess is they'll offer the supposed 270 HP 4.7L for the Dakota also. I've read something about a 240 or 245 HP 4.7L but I can't find the article.
Just speculation but you know DC is going to have to put out bigger numbers because of GM's new V-6 motor making 270 HP and such.
