Subject: Dirt bike in Quad cab? IP: Logged
Message: Ok everyone, I've been fighting with this decision for a while now, as to whether I want to trade my ext cab in on a Quad cab. The reason I have a truck is because of my dirt bikes. Will a couple of full-size dirt bikes fit in the back of a Quad cab with the tailgate open and without having to cock them sideways a little (that's kind harsh on the forks)? What kind of bikes have been hauled in the smaller bed? Thanks everyone.

Message: yes they will tailgate open only one guy i ride with has one. Measure from very front of your front tire to bottom of rear tire and check it out to see for youself. Or better yet take one for a test drive bring it home and load up your bike to see for sure. You can put a spacer in between the top of the front tire and the bottom of the bottom triple clamp (under front fender) to releave stress on the forks i use a piece of black pvc pipe so it grips into the tire but you can buy the actual fork saver spacers but not sure where try (dennis kirk.com).

Message: I only haul 1 bike in mine. I usually put the front tire in the drivers side corner and the back tire on the passengers side tailgate. strap the bars and for extra measure I strap the frame by the footpeg to the rear ty-down-spot. As for two bikes in strait they will probably fit but it will be close.

Message: I ride a Suzuki 650 thumper dual sport and it fits in straight but with the tailgate down. It will not fit sideways with the tailgate closed though. just about 2 inches too long to fit! But then again.... it's a 650cc close to 400lbs.
BEWARE though..... it will bend/crack the front of the bed. It is not welded securely and mine cracked / bent right in the middle. I am now researching ways to strengthen the front fo the bed.
Good luck.

Message: My 98 had the same problem with bending the front bedrail, thats why I plant the tire into the corner of the bed. You wont fit any bike into the bed of a quad with it closed, except maybe a mini.

Message: Some one suggested I tack weld, rivet, or some how secure a peice of angle iron to that bent section. I was planning on doing this and then having it sprayed with Line-X.

Message: Hey Julian, I have the same problem, but now, the front of the bed is touching the cab and rubbing a rusty raw spot on it. There is a page in one of the Motocross, or Dirt Wheels Mags that has a Bar To save your bed.

Message: Well, I was gonna ask how to go about straightening the front wall after being bent toward the cab (previous owner, I didn't realize it was like that until I removed the drop-in liner), but it looks like the fabtech bar will do that as it is bolted into place.
At least that is the idea I get from their description. They don't have any pics of the actual installation of this bar.
But seriously, how sturdy can this be? It's bolted to the bed, and the front wall of the bed isn't really all that strong. Wouldn't you worry about your bike's weight pulling the bar off the bed? (My bike weighs almost 600lbs)

Message: if it was me, this is what i would do. Don't buy the fabtec bar. The "Sportbar" looks a heck of alot better and sturdier. I would look at the sportbar reall close, print out a couple of pictures or make a drawing of it, then take it to one of your welding shops or machine shops in town. Then you could paint it the color you want it. I would be a WHOLE lot cheaper that way.
