Message: Well my father is goning to help me replace my pos 85 300zx so my choice is a truck. I like the looks of a dak so I choose it. What I want I am not getting but a qc 4.7 multi-auto with the 33.92 would be nice. Now on a realistic ideal's I have about 12-13K to spend(maybe 14 or 15 but lower the better). I guess I am getting the reg cab with the 3.9 or the 4.7 with stick(no air either) with the 3.92 gears. That would wost about 14 or 15 with rebate. Now which do you think would be better which gets better gas, cheaper ins. Basically I want the 4.7 but I really want to know IYO if the 3.9 would suit me. I am high school student with limited cash ia have to pay my own gas and ins. I won't tow anything but I will haul alot in the bed now and again(nothing too heavy). Well what do you think?

Go with the 4.7

Message: Do you have to get a "new" truck? Or will a "slightly used" truck do?
I recently got a GREAT deal on a used 1999 V8 (5.2L) Dakota CC 4x4... Since the mileage was still within the factory warranty period, I was also able to extend the factory warranty out to 4 years/75,000 miles as well...
By getting a 2 year old vehicle, I basically knocked off almost $10,000 in depreciation, while still getting a vehicle that was in VERY good shape (I guess the previous owner took good care of it).
I'm truly convinced that this is the way to go... these trucks hold their value really well and the engine is very strong. I'm more than happy with it.
I would look at all the options before settling for something you really don't want. There's nothing worse than spending money on something you actually don't want, just because "it's all you can afford". You pretty much won't appreciate it or take care of it which would be a shame as well.

Message: Well the 3.9 would suit most poeples needs, but if you're like me you want it faster, and room for passengers. I put almost 15k down and I got a 10k loan for 5 years on the 4.7L Quad Cab. I'm 21 my payment is about $200 on my loan $200 on insurance, and with my 74 mile a day commute for school it was probably about $240 a month for gas. $640 damn that adds up. but mine is a 5sp.....they're more fun. My daddy helped me too... I love my truck, but gas sucks I transfered schools so my commute will be 2 miles :) priorites!!

Message: I think that a slightly used Dak may be the way for you to go, and for what you're prepared to $pend, you'll be able to find one that'll put a smile on your face, but I'll also advise to go for the 4.7 if possible... MPG as good the 3.9, WAY more power, and with the soon-to-be-available performance mods, there's gonna be even MORE power to be had.
The main reasons that I found it neccessary to factory-order mine were-
-Patriot Blue Pearlcoat
-Limited slip
-Bucket seats
None of these were on ANY Dak that I saw on the dealership lots... and I looked for weeks.

Message: Damn, I would ask my dad to buy me a truck, but since I am gettin up to makin' just as much as him, he just kinda laughs in my face. He did however get my snow tyres mounted and balanced when I was at work for me.
I have a 02/RC/4.7L/3.92/SLT+/LSD?bucket seats...the truck cost me around 17,500, but if you apply for the farmers rebate it's only 17. I think you can get a REAL nice 2000 for the money you want to spend.
BTW, I just graduated HS and DAMN the insurance bites me in the ass! Almost as much as my payment on the truck...and the 4.7L OWNS, you have got to get that...beat the hell outta them ricers at your school and thems phat civics.

Ouch, don't judge everyone like that who is young. I am 18 and just graduated HS last year and now am working as a web developer and I think I am doing quite well for my age and still have plenty of money left over (computer crap, I have two 19" server racks to fill :). My parents are also sending me to school, so I'm covered there, but I do get what you are saying...perfectly.
It is VERY important to see if you can really afford that car. Sure you can pay for it, but is that the ONLY thing you really want to be paying for? I see a lot of people I used to know who just graduated with me Driving Mustangs, new Accords, Preludes, Z71s, etc...but they are like many of the rest of the people that did the same before them. They work in meaningless jobs and party all night, but are not going to school, just still living in high school. They never grow up, don't make the mistake MANY people here do.
It is even WORSE here now, because the tuning your import car craze has just taken this small Montana town by storm in the last year and everyone is concerned with just "pimping" out their car and that's all their money is going to -- even more than ever.
Also, getting a car that you pay it's worth in insurance every two years sucks too. My insurance is 200/month...and I'm getting some good deals and have a perfect driving record. Be sure to ask your insurance agency HOW MUCH that truck is going to cost you. Also look to see if you can afford gas, fun money, inital registraton soem places hurts...tomorrow I am paying mine which is 230+ dollars.

Sorry if I appeared harsh. Didn't mean to. It's just that as a (former) HS Physics Teacher I've seen so many HS kids piss their future away for a @#$%#$ car. And their parents were no help in that dept. I sold my car for college money, and put myself through 10 years of it. Retired VERY young with mucho $$$$ in the bank, and now can play with cars and planes as toys. Deferred gratification, and at a much higher level.
Billionaire Penske said "my Dad said I could have anything I paid for myself". That's a wonderful example of self-sufficiency for youngsters who would rather have it all now, but who end up later with nothing.

Big time physics guy eh? I have to learn to incorporate a lot of that in a program today, might have to spam you for some ideas ;) I do however need to get a new physics book, I am using my dad's old one from when he was in college! Got any reccomendations as a good reference? Thanks.

Well, at least it is not politically corrected.

Suppose I could always write you one. .
Don't forget to take some Business courses during your College stay. All the money in this world is made by buying and selling (think hard about it). Doesn't matter how good you are at what you do, if you can't buy and sell smart you will never get rich. That includes even negotiating your own salary, which is of course selling.
Sounds like you are on the right track. Aim high, but be flexible and be an opportunist, keep your nose clean, and stay on target. You will do well!

Better yet, courses on ENTREPRENUERSHIP, if you can find them. Entrepreneurs are the ones who hire the business grads, and take home the big money. It's the American way.

Message: Oh yes, this thread is about YourFirstTruck. After you make the sacrifices and score big, you go down to whatever dealer, pick out whatever you want, negotiate the daylights out of it (because that's how you became successful), and of course pay cash for your First NEW Truck.
Until then, spend $2,000 on good used wheels and save the rest for College. Use those wheels to take you back and forth to your part time job, and save that money too.

Planning on it. I buy probably 100 dollars worth of books bi-weekly. Some of those include books about management, memory development, negotiating, copy writing (which I still need to get thru obviously ;), and odd books like "The Prince"..
"That includes even negotiating your own salary, which is of course selling."
Too late! ..already have and am, currently still doing that. When I gave my Resume and Cover Letter to my current employer they did NOT know, nor could they tell I was a high school student.
"Doesn't matter how good you are at what you do, if you can't buy and sell smart you will never get rich."
Sadly, I already know this. It is a very depressive thing. I know people I went to school with that have AMAZING skill, but don't even like people and never get any interaction with others. The other people I know who are pathetic and are totally clueless, but have such a high ambition and good people skills, get the other's jobs. Jobs that they are not even qualified for in my opinion.. I know of probably half a dozen examples off the top of my head right now who are all friends. Both sides, the skilled ones, and the dumb ones.
"Better yet, courses on ENTREPRENUERSHIP, if you can find them. Entrepreneurs are the ones who hire the business grads, and take home the big money. It's the American way."
Start a business and pay those people with large amounts of skill and no negotiating skills real low...hrm.
"negotiate the daylights out of it (because that's how you became successful"
Yupp, I was talking to over 8 dealers all at the same time and told them that. They each told me what they could do and made me offers, I told them to go back and see if they could do better. That was just on my Dakota. For the most part, no one was able to beat Dave Smith Motor's bargain..
SPeaking up (b!tching) is also good too. Two weeks ago, I was not very happy when I went to Blockbuster and they had only 25 of these "Buy Shrek DVD and get 10 FREE movie rentals" all for 25 dollars. I called up and told them that I felt it was a loss-leader trap and want them to find me one. They did.
That DVD can then be sold back to WalMart for a refund of 20 dollars or so and then the outcome of 5 dollars in total, paid for 10 free movie/dvd rentals at Blockbuster. =P
