Subject: Hemi not a Hemi ? IP: Logged
Message: I keep reading on these boards that the new 5.7 Hemi is not actualy a Hemi. I say prove it, I suppose the new HO Diesel is not a Diesel either.

Message: do you mean the 5.7 or the 4.7 ? because the 4.7 is not a true hemi.

Message: Imagine what a "hemisphere" looks like; use a globe of the Earth as a reference. The cylinder head in the Hemi above the piston is shaped like a globe from the Equator upwards, i.e. half of the Earth. This chamber allows an increased explosive area over the piston. Yes the 5.7 IS a "hemi", so was the old 426, the 331, even the Ford Boss 429. The 4.7 is a "semi-hemi", because the head doesn't complete the dome shape, but has a flat side on one corner. I'm just an old hot rodder, not an engineer, but Chrysler wouldn't dare advertise an imitation Hemi...

Message: The 5.7's head is not a perfect 180 degree
spherical dome, so to the purists, it's not a
true hemi. But its close enough for DC and
everybody else.
