I bought a 97 5.2. the first owner had done some mods K&N filter and an exhaust system. i'm the 3rd owner and the guy who sold it to me has no idea what he's talking about. Do you guys have any tips on how I might identify what type of exhuast this thing has?

The first place I'd start would be the tubing itself. Measure it. Is it 3" or 2.5? Is it Mandrel Bent, compression bent or is it crinkled and wrinkled? Look at the muffler. Most manufacturers stamp their name somewhere. It may be on the top of the muffler.

If you have 3" mandrel bent pipe, you are in pretty good shape. If you don't like the sound of your muffler you can replace it but my guess is you won't notice too much of an improvement in performance.
