Subject: Revisiting the ABS / Brake Lt on
IP: Logged

Message:
After reviewing allot of good post from my search I am trying to clarify Sensor or HCU problem.

ABS and brake lite come on after reaching speeds over 45 - 60 mph. Below that the speedo works fine and the lts do not come on. After a shut down the lt clears.

One guys said the dealer changed the HCU and reset the code. A few others said the Brake lt switch behind the pedal worked for them.

Is there something in the description of my problem that norrows it down better?

Thanks

CHris

I recall the same problem with my 99 5.2 cc. It was the speed/abs sensor that is located on the rear end housing. It cost $35 and worked for me.

After reading all the post on this I tend to think it may not be the rear speed sensor on the rear diff. Most stated with this grip it did not fix the problem since as far as I understand it the speedo and the abs/brake lites have issues.

Hardbody posted this:
re-read my previous reply, if the speedo isn't effected when the brake and ABS lights are on than most likely it's not the 2 sensors you mentioned, it may be the same as what was wrong with mine, the HCU ( hydraulic control unit) it controls the ABS, dealer replaced mine in 15 minutes and it cured the problem. The code for the HCU came up when they checked it also.

I know other people on my previous post about this subject mentioned a speed sensor could be bad but they said the rear-end speed sensor will effect the 0 to 15 mph reading on the speedometer and the sensor on the tranny ( if bad) effects the mph reading at speeds over 15. service writer said that's one way to tell what sensor is bad

I am not seeing the speedo problem and this is why I ask if someone can clarify this.

I may just start changing things and hope I get lucky but was hoping I could narrow it down.

Thanks for the input!

Chris

Try diagnosing the problem. Otherwise you are hanging parts or more commonly called guessing.

Jason,

Thanks but that does defeat the purpose of this board. If know one know's or can add anything further, I may try a thing or 2, or just take it to the mech but that is so inconvienent.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Chris

The speedo may not be affected. There have been posts on a number of Dodge forums where the speedo was not affected when the rear sensor went out or the speedo acted up a different speeds. My speedo never stopped working.

I should update this post. I finally had my mechanic trouble shoot this problem and my error was a brake light switch error code. All they did was reset the the code and I have not had the problem again.
