I began to obsess about getting a 5.9 QC about two years ago, after I discovered this board. However, soon I began to realize the engine was over the hill, the tranny was if not unreliable at least very sensitive and I was going to get like 12 mpg in every day driving. But that wasn't the worst thing! On the couple of test drives I took last year the trucks were horrible! Yet on the very last day they accepted orders in May I ordered a full time 4X4 QC, pretty loaded. Well after 500 miles (I know, I have a long way to go!) am I ever glad I did. My first 300 miles of combination driving I got 16.2 mpg. The next 271 I did everything in the world to get poor milage. Numerous moderately hard break in accelerations, city and mountain road driving and I got 15.05 mpg. But the thing I love about it, and the reason I wanted the 5.9, it torques up every hill in the world without shifting ( and I have some great challenges for it here in PA). It even goes up small grades at 1100 rpms without shifting. No detonation either! The key is the 3.92 rear which doesn't seem to affect mileage to much. The tranny isn't nearly as refined as my Cherokee (166,000 on it) tranny, however, that and a high piched whistle at idle are my only complaints. Given the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" philosophy maybe I shouldn't mod it since it is already doing what I wanted it to. And last but not least, it really rides nice (I did install a roadmaster suspension) too!

Love to hear from the PA dak owners. I bought a wrecked 2001 QC 4x4 SLT earlier this year. Has the 360 and about every option I could ever dream of owning. I'm up in Erie, not far from Butler. I'm working on a homebrew cold air intake currently, I'll let you know how it works out. Once I get the stupid PA salvage paperwork done, I can't wait to drive! Especially after hearing comments like yours!
