Subject: Belly Pan Gasket IP: Logged
Message: Tomorrow I will be attempting to replace my belly pan gasket. Does anyone have any tips or advice who has done this? Also it would be helpful to know what gaskets to order. I picked up a can of "The Right Stuff" to use as the belly pan gasket. I was told at Napa that I would need Valve Cover gaskets as well as intake manifold gaskets. Do the valve covers really need to be removed? I also looked in Haynes manual and it says nothign about the valve covers but it does mention that the Distributor needs to be removed. Any thougts on this?

No Mark, you don't have to pull them to replace the belly-pan gasket. Make sure that you do have the intake manifold gaskets as they are a seperate piece from the pan gasket. (At least on the '97+ models.)
The distributor needs to be removed? Did they cast the manifold around it on the '93 models? (If not, it shouldn't have to come out at all.)

Message: I just got back from Strauss. I ordered a FelPro intake manifold gasket for $37. It will be in tomorrow morning. I figure I can use the RTV for the distributor if the need be. It is too dark to check it out now. As for the valve covers, I think Napa was just trying to make an extra $45 becuase it struck me as odd when he said it. I will probably take pictures and document the process including all my f-ups in case anyone else wants to attempt it. I cant wait to be able to use 87 octane gasoline. I never could get away with it since I got the truck 5 years ago. Thats probably why I was the 6th owner after the first 31,000 miles. I cant complain though. Its never let me down in the past and at 92,500 miles I would consider this routine maintenance. ;) I also never did a trans service so this is a good opportunity to do both.

Message: Hi Mark,
Years ago when I was working on my old Dodges, I had to take one valve cover off because the intake would catch on the lip of the valve cover. There appeared to be no way around it, you couldn't even just loosen it, I tried.
As for the distributor, I'm sure you can get around that without removing it. If you decide to remove it, take the cap off first to make which way the rotor is pointing, you'd be a half hour ahead of the game, trust me. And mark the distributor too.
Have fun.

Message: BMac, thats what I figured. I can see it sticks out past the edge of the head. I just picked up the gasket for the intake manifold and it came with the gasket for the belly pan. The gasket looks really cheap like its just waiting to explode. haha anyway thanks for the info I'll keep you posted.
Andrew, I didnt do the trans yet I probably wont do it todya because I want to get this gasket done before the end of the day. I'll let you know when I do though.

Message: I now know why this is such a common problem. The gasket that Chrysler puts on is a piece of crap. The Fel-Pro I got is metal. At least someone got it right. I just hope everything goes back together in working order. :|

Message: I just did that and did remove the passenger side valve cover, but the factory valve cover gasket was in great shape so I didn't need to replace it. I didn't take out the distributor, or even the cap. But as long as you are in there that deep, look at your thermostat, belts, hoses, etc. My FACTORY manual is full of crap so if Haynes copied information from that source, they will give out the same bad info. My manual refers to an exhaust crossover that doesn't exist, and tells me to put a dab of RTV gasket sealer at each corner of the throttle body. They meant at the corners of the intake manifold, where the gaskets meet. That is standard procedure when replacing an intake manifold.
