Message: Investigation already opened on the Durango (which uses the same control arm):
THE OFFICE OF DEFECTS INVESTIGATION (ODI) HAS RECEIVED FOUR COMPLAINTS ALLEGING THAT THE FRONT SUSPENSION UPPER BALL JOINT FAILED AND RESULTED IN A LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL. TWO OF THE COMPLAINTS NOTED THAT A WHEEL SEPARATION HAD OCCURED. THE OTHER TWO COMPLAINTS NOTED THAT THE FRONT SUSPENSION COLLAPSED. IN ADDITION, THERE ARE EIGHTY-ONE (81) COMPLAINTS IN THE ODI DATABASE THAT ALLEGED THE FRONT SUSPENSION BALL JOINTS WORE OUT PREMATURELY.

Message: DETROIT (Reuters) - U.S. safety regulators said on Tuesday they have opened an investigation into 450,000 Dodge Durango sport utility vehicles made by DaimlerChrysler AG's (DCX) (DCXGn) Chrysler arm and have upgraded an investigation into 217,000 Chrysler cars.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened the Durango probe Thursday after receiving four complaints that the upper ball joint in the front suspension could fail, causing the driver to lose control. In two complaints, the wheel separated; in the other two, the suspension collapsed.
NHTSA also said it had 81 complaints that the ball joints wore out prematurely. The investigation covers 1998 through 2003 Durangos.
The upgraded investigation, known as an engineering analysis and usually the last step before a recall, involves problems with the interlock between the ignition and the transmission on 1999 Plymouth Breeze and Dodge Stratus cars and Chrysler Sebring convertibles.
NHTSA said it had found 113 complaints where the key could be removed from the ignition without the transmission in park, or where the transmission could be shifted out of park with the ignition off, both of which led to the vehicles rolling unexpectedly. The complaints include reports of 28 accidents and five minor injures.
It said the transmission investigation was upgraded Wednesday.

Message: My local newspaper had an article in it today about the Dodge Durango/Dakota ball joint problem.
I feel that Dodge needs to totally redesign the suspension on these trucks.

Message: Its good to see that they may do something about it. does this problem affect 2 and 4wd models? I ask because on my 02 quad 4x4 the ball joints are fine after almost 40k. The big problem i see with them is they have no grease fitting. i grease mine by slipping a needle greaser under the boot and filling it up. like i said mine are fine, i just had them checked recently by an alignment shop.

Message: Well, I only have 35,000 miles on my 4.7 CC Sport but 10k was spent on the bump-stops, which I think would cause some serious problems if it wasn't at least a sturdy suspension. I do complain about my truck seeming to be not quite as well built as I would like it to be due to the general squeaking/rattling over bumps, but it sure is fun outrunning Mustangs with a near stock truck!
How many miles should I look for my ball joints to begin to wear out?
BTW, does anyone elses swaybar rub the front wheel in a tight turn? Only one side does it but it ate through the lead balance weight after I put 2" drop springs up front. I'm wondering if it would be worth it to get a Hotchkis or R/T swaybar to stop that and improve handling.

Message: Mr. H --- I have the same problem on mine, whenever i make a left U-turn it rubs the sway bar (I have the 3" drop in the front) I think that I just need bigger wheels to solve this problem ;). get your wheelweights placed inside the rim rather than on the lip, problem solved.

Message: I had to have my ball joints replaced at 18,000 miles one my 2002 AWD Dak. They began to make a popping sound. I had to take it to the dealer 3 times before they admited there was a problem. Thanks God I didn't take no for an answer.
