Message: Circuit City has an Alpine cd changer ($ 242) plus $ 70 for installation. It is controlled through a Fm modulator.
Is this the best way to go?? Where is the best place to install the cd changer? (under passenger seat or center console or behind drivers seat)
Or is it better to go to a dealership and get the factory unit installed?
Any comments will be appreciated.

I have heard that there are problems with the signals from the FM modualtors, but I don't know specifics. The best way to go is to pick up a new head unit with CD changer controls. Alpine makes a din and a half unit which fits perfectly in the Gen3 dashes.
The installation locations you mentioned are fine and I have seen changers mounted in both locations. If it was mine, I would mount it on the back wall behind the seats (reg. cab). Make sure it can be mounted vertically, though.

Message: I have the Alpine 6 disk cd changer under the back set, drivers side in the CC. This is about the only place to put it as the seats are too low even for a thin 6 disk changer. I have not had any issues with the FM modulation and I am very happy with the Alpine.
Aside from the performance, I also like the fact that this setup is pretty inconspicuous; when a stereo thief looks in and sees an OEM head unit, the thief is not likely to break into the truck! The Alpine remote control is small and is difficult to view from outside so crooks would have a hard time determining if there is even a CD changer in the cab.

Message: I had the dealer swap in the OEM radio with the CD Changer controls and put the Alpine in the Center Console (bucket seats).
My wife's Grand Caravan had the FM Modulator, but I didn't like the look, or the extra little remote, so I wanted the OEM controls for my Dak.
I have a 2001 QuadCab and the Alpine did not fit under either rear seat.
It did fit under the passenger seat, however, I thought it was too easily kicked by my kids.
FWIW,

Message: Thanks for the comments! I went with the alpine 6cd changer mounted inside the console. Fits real nice. The guys at the radio store used an adapter to hook up the cd directly to the Dodge radio. (cost of $ 79) I can now control the cd changer directly from the factory radio. The changer went for $ 299 and installation was $ 20.00 Total of $ 400 plus tax.
Expensive, but does it ever sound nice.
