I developed a vibration in the truck about two weeks ago. Its an 02 quad cab 4wd 4.7 auto 3.55 with only 12k miles. I assumed a bad tire and took it into the Goodyear guys. They found a front tire "scrubbed" due to the front end out of alingment. They aligned the front end and moved the scrubbed tire from front right to back left. No change in vibration in the truck. Took it back and they put on four new Wranglers (at about 1/3 list). Still no change in vibration. I figured problem not in the tires so I took it to the dealer. Dealer says one tire is slightly out-of-round, I got to fix that first. Ok, call tire store and they order one more tire. Meantime I replace suspect tire with spare, no change in vibration.

The vibration is really bad under slight load at about 45 to 50. If I lift the gas it almost completely diasppears. This is got me thinking driveline somewhere, like rear end or something. Drive shaft looks OK, nothing noticably wrong. Any ideas?

Thanks, Nate

Drive shaft, check for any dents or creases. Had one the size of a dime in mine and it shook at 57mph to 62mph.

What kyle said. It may even be out of balance. Take it to a speed shop that specializes in custom drive shafts. They'll be able to tell you if the drive shaft is OK or causing your problems. From what you describe, it sounds like the drive shaft threw off it's balance weight. You didn't high side on anything did you?

If that's it you might need new u-joints as an out of balance or damaged drive shaft can significantly shorten the life of u joints. I think QC's have an intermediate bearing (if not I'm sure I'll be corrected, LOL) and that might be baffed too.

Maybe talk to the dealer first and see what they want to do. I can see no reason why you should have to pay for a defective drive shaft. DC may even cover the cost of the new tires. I have to give the nod to Kyle on this one.

I am experiencing a simular situation. I have the vibration at 40-50 MPH (1500 RPM). First thing I did was get the tires re-balanced. No Change. Today I took it to a local Driveline shop and He said everything looked in good order. He did say he saw no weights toward the front of the drive shaft (maybe it never had any or maybe they fell off) and recommended I get the Drivetrain balanced. I have an appointment tommorow 7/29/03 to get the balance done. I will keep you posted on the results.
By the way I have a 2000 QC 5.9 40K

I have had truck worked on twice and now 3 mths after last shop visit it is in there again, shakes when trying to back up and had trans tighted up the bolts were loose, and it has had 2 bell housings put on last two visits and now the machanic says that is what the problem is again, I think it is the drive shaft, it is a 5 speed s-10 and I am tired of this guy putting bell housings in and not fixing the vibration problem.
